Summer of Making can mean any hands-on project you take on during the warmer months: a small website, a circuit experiment, a stop-motion film, or a simple flying machine. It is also the name of Hack Club’s youth program; its 2025 edition has ended, and the organization invites people to sign up for updates about future events.
What does “Summer of Making” mean?
As a general idea, making spans software, electronics, crafts, and experimentation. You do not need a dedicated workshop: a project can be planned and built at home with the tools and materials it actually requires. Documented summer activities have included experimenting with circuits, making stop-motion videos, and building flying machines.

What are some easy DIY projects to make this summer?
“Easy” depends on what you already know, own, and have space to do. The ideas below are starting points documented in summer programs or cited as student-project examples—not tested designs or ranked recommendations. Treat the effort and supply notes as practical planning guidance, not measured comparisons.

- Software or physical build: Software avoids buying physical components, while hardware and craft builds need materials and a suitable place to work. Either can be shared as a finished project or demonstration.
- Budget and what you own: Begin with items already available. For a hardware project, identify every required component before choosing a board or tool.
- Time and skill: Make the first version small. A short animation or simple website may be easier to scope than a robot with several moving parts, but the actual workload depends on the design and your experience.
- Workspace: Consider whether you need a clear indoor surface, a computer, room to assemble something, or an outdoor place to test it.
- Sharing: Choose a result you can demonstrate: a video, a working page, a circuit response, or a physical model. Keep notes or photos as you work if you want to explain how it came together.
What can I build with a Raspberry Pi?
A Raspberry Pi can be one option for a project that needs a small computer, such as a website or interactive hardware build. It is not a requirement for every summer project: stop-motion, a simple flying machine, and many software projects can use other equipment or materials.

What supplies do I need to start making?
There is no universal maker kit. Start with the chosen project’s instructions and assemble only what they call for. A stop-motion project may use a phone or camera; a circuit build needs components specified by its schematic; a software project needs an appropriate computer and development setup. Those are project-dependent examples, not a standard materials list.
- Read the complete instructions before purchasing parts.
- Check tool and workspace needs, including any guidance for safe assembly or testing.
- For electronics, follow a project guide that specifies components and wiring; the activity examples cited here do not provide circuit instructions.
- Choose equipment for the build rather than buying specialty tools simply because they appear in a maker catalog.
Is Hack Club’s Summer of Making open now?
Hack Club’s page states that Summer of Making 2025 has ended and invites visitors to sign up for future event updates. It does not establish that a 2026 edition exists. The page’s current FAQ describes terms for the ended 2025 program: eligible participants were high schoolers or younger, participation was free, and shipping for prizes was covered. Those facts should not be treated as an offer or eligibility rules for a future edition.

The program has changed across editions. GitHub’s May 28, 2020 announcement described a six-week remote program open to teenagers aged 13–18 worldwide, with mentorship and needs-based hardware support.
