The Periodic Table of Sewing Elements is a sewing-room poster that recasts the familiar periodic-table layout with sewing words, textures and patterns. Carla Hegeman Crim, writing as The Scientific Seamstress, created the original chart for her sewing lab. Its chemistry joke is the shared element Fe: iron.
What is the Periodic Table of Sewing Elements?
It is a playful decorative chart, not a chemistry reference or sewing instruction guide. Each element-like letter is paired with a sewing term, and some boxes use a texture or pattern that relates to the term. Crim described the varied colors as reminiscent of a patchwork quilt. The Scientific Seamstress’s original post presents it as decor for her sewing laboratory.
The pun connects the two tables: the chemical symbol Fe stands for iron, also a familiar sewing-room tool. Crim posed the question in her post, and commenters supplied the answer.
Who made the original chart?
Carla Hegeman Crim, known as The Scientific Seamstress, created the original design. Make’s 2011 coverage also credits Crim and describes the chart as a downloadable poster for display.

Crim’s post described two file sizes: a small version for home printing and a 20 × 30-inch version for printing online or at a local print shop. She also said she replaced an earlier file after readers noticed misplaced duplicates. Those details describe the 2011 post; the available sources do not establish whether its original download links still work today.
Where can you get a print?
The original post documented printable files, but their current availability is not confirmed. A physical poster listing with the same title appears on Fine Art America, credited to Amanda Hyde. How does it fit a sewing room?
The chart works as visual humor for a sewing studio, sewing room or textiles workspace. In the same post, Crim shows practical studio details including a cutting mat, a magnetic holder for tools such as scissors and seam rippers, and open beakers for storing buttons, zippers and embroidery floss. Those are part of the room context, not items needed to use the chart.
