This woodworking brain teaser places a real golf ball inside a softwood block, where it appears trapped. The Make: project uses a 1 3/4 × 1 3/4 × 5-inch blank, a 1 1/4-inch Forstner bit, and hot-water-softened wood to make room for the ball.

The dimensions and method come from Gareth Branwyn’s August 25, 2015 Make: article, which credits the project to Woodlogger: Build This Brain-Teasing Golf Ball in a Block of Wood.
How the woodworking brain teaser works
The block is drilled with elongated oval openings. Hot water saturates and softens the wood fibers so the golf ball can be pressed into one side. Once the wood dries, the ball appears enclosed by the block. The key constraint is the thin side rails: forcing the ball can damage them.

Build the golf ball puzzle
- Prepare the blank. Cut softwood to 1 3/4 × 1 3/4 × 5 inches.
- Drill the openings. Use the 1 1/4-inch Forstner bit to make elongated oval openings through the block, as shown in the project instructions.
- Soak the wood. Immerse the block in very hot, non-boiling water for about 4–5 minutes, until the fibers are saturated.
- Press in the ball gently. While the wood is softened, carefully press the golf ball into one side. The side rails are thin, so use gentle pressure rather than trying to force the ball.
The source does not give a specific water temperature or a drying time. It also does not provide detailed safety procedures; take care when handling hot water and using drilling tools.

The project is shown unfinished. To make the block more presentable, Make: suggests applying a simple stain or another finish. Tape the golf ball first to keep it clean. The article does not specify a stain type.
