What is Morgan Spurlock’s artisan documentary?

Crafted is a short documentary directed by Morgan Spurlock. Häagen-Dazs commissioned the film, which premiered at the Los Angeles Film Festival in 2015. Fast Company described it as a 25-minute film profiling three businesses; Häagen-Dazs’ launch announcement described five artisans. Those counts refer to different things: three featured businesses represented by five makers, though the available accounts do not provide a complete roster of everyone shown. Which artisans and crafts does the film feature?

Bloodroot Blades: knife making

In Arnoldsville, Georgia, Bloodroot Blades’ makers build knives by hand. Forbes’ June 2015 coverage reported that a chef’s knife cost around $550 at the time and that the makers had a substantial order backlog. Those are historical details, not current prices or wait times. The film’s focus is the work behind the object, rather than a product review. (Forbes)

Bar Tartine: food and restaurant craft

The San Francisco restaurant Bar Tartine represents food-making in the film’s account of artisan practice. Its inclusion places kitchen work alongside the making of physical tools: craft here spans both what people eat and the objects used to prepare it. (Fast Company; Forbes)

Nagatani: Japanese pottery

The film also visits Nagatani pottery makers in Japan, whose work includes clay cooking pots. The pottery segment broadens the film from food and tools to traditional craft practice. (Fast Company; Forbes)

What does Crafted say about making things?

The documentary links its different subjects through process: the time, attention and persistence involved in making useful things by hand. Spurlock framed the project around reconnecting viewers with the things they use and eat and with the care invested in producing them. Bloodroot Blades maker David van Wyk put the value of handwork simply: “The ability to work with our hands is a gift,” Forbes reported in June 2015.

The commissioning context matters. Häagen-Dazs asked Spurlock to make a film about artisans, and he said the brand allowed the filmmakers to make the movie they wanted to make, according to Fast Company. Crafted is therefore brand-funded storytelling, not an independent study of the artisan economy. Its value for viewers is as a portrait of particular makers and their work, not as evidence about the industry as a whole. (Fast Company)

Where can you watch Crafted?

At launch in June 2015, Häagen-Dazs announced that the film would be available on Amazon Prime Instant Video under an exclusive four-month arrangement; Eater also reported the Amazon streaming release. That is a historical distribution detail, not confirmation that the documentary is currently included with Prime or available in every country. Check the Prime Video listing for your own region and account before relying on it. (Häagen-Dazs announcement; Eater; Prime Video)
