Heather Jansch (1948–2021) turned driftwood gathered on Devon beaches into expressive horses, from small mixed-media pieces to life-size sculptures. Her close knowledge of equine anatomy informed the work; later, concerns about driftwood outdoors led her to develop bronze casts. The Eden Horse brought her sculptures to a wider audience, and her estate says it continues to complete editions using moulds she made during her lifetime.
How Heather Jansch found her sculptural material
Jansch studied fine art at Walthamstow Technical College and Goldsmiths, University of London. Born Heather Sewell, she married folk musician Bert Jansch in 1968. While living on a Welsh hill farm, she bred Welsh Cobs. Her official biography describes those years as an apprenticeship in equine anatomy and behaviour—knowledge that helped her observe horses as living forms rather than simply as motifs.

After settling in South Devon in 1981, she developed a more impressionistic painting style and began experimenting with sculpture, including copper wire and plaster. Those materials did not give her horse figures the vitality she wanted. Driftwood found on Devon beaches offered a different way forward: its existing contours could suggest a body, while copper wire could help connect and extend the form. In her memorial profile, Jansch recalled, “The answer came in on the tide. Driftwood. It was like a thunderbolt, I had never seen it used in sculpture but combining it with copper wire gave the sculpture a power and authentic quality that made it something extraordinary.”
How Jansch made driftwood horses
Rather than carving a horse from a uniform block, Jansch built her figures from pieces of found wood, using their shapes, textures and natural irregularities as part of the composition. Copper wire helped join or extend the material. The result could be recognisably equine without smoothing away the character of the wood: the horse’s form emerged through the arrangement of separate pieces.

What is the Eden Horse?
After Jansch’s work appeared in the 1999 exhibition “The Shape of the Century” and its 2000 London Docklands presentation, Eden Project founder Tim Smit invited her to become artist-in-residence, according to her official biography. During that residency she made the life-size driftwood sculpture known as the Eden Horse. Its scale helped bring her work to a broader audience. The Eden Project currently lists bronze and driftwood horse sculptures by Jansch outside its main entrance; visitors should check the project’s current information when planning a visit.

Why Jansch made bronze casts
Driftwood’s limited durability in outdoor settings became a concern. Jansch worked for several years with fine-art foundry mould-makers to develop a way to cast her complex forms in bronze. This let her translate the assembled shapes of her sculptures into a more durable material without treating the bronze works as newly designed pieces.
Jansch’s estate says it continues casting from moulds she made during her career to complete editions she began. These are posthumous casts from her moulds, not new designs by Jansch. The available information does not provide a comparative conservation assessment, so bronze should not be treated as maintenance-free or guaranteed suitable for every site.
