To assemble amigurumi, follow the pattern’s joining order, pin each piece in place, check its position from more than one angle, then sew through the crochet stitches with a blunt tapestry needle and matching yarn. Stuff and close each part when the pattern calls for it; there is no single correct order for every design.
What to prepare before sewing
Read the entire pattern first. Identify which pieces are joined while open, which need stuffing before they are closed, and where features such as eyes or a muzzle belong. Construction varies, so pattern instructions take precedence over a general method.
- Finished crocheted pieces, arranged in their intended orientation
- A blunt tapestry or yarn needle
- Matching yarn for the seams
- Pins or stitch markers to hold pieces temporarily
- Polyester fiberfill, if the pattern calls for it

How to sew amigurumi pieces together
- Lay out the pieces. Arrange the parts as they should sit on the finished figure. Use the pattern’s round or stitch references to identify the front, top, and attachment point rather than estimating when those references are available.
- Pin and check placement. Hold limbs, ears, or other parts with pins or stitch markers. Look at the figure from the front and side, and compare matching pieces for height and angle. Adjust them before sewing; correcting placement is easier before the seam is made.
- Thread the needle with matching yarn. Use a blunt tapestry needle and a yarn tail long enough to sew the join. The pattern may specify a particular seam; otherwise, choose a method that suits the edge shape and desired appearance. Whip stitch, mattress or ladder stitch, and pattern-specific joins are all possibilities, not universal rules.
- Sew through corresponding stitches. Pass the needle through the edge of the attached piece and the corresponding crochet stitches on the body. Keep your tension even: a seam should hold the pieces together without pulling the fabric into puckers.
- Stuff and close as directed. Add fiberfill only at the stage the pattern specifies. Some designs call for stuffing while crocheting; others have you add it during assembly or before closing an opening.
- Fasten off and weave in the tail. Secure the yarn at the end of the seam, then weave the remaining tail into the crochet fabric. If a limb feels loose, check the join and reinforce it through the seam rather than relying on a loose pass.

Choose a joining method for the piece and its job
When a pattern allows a choice, base it on the edges being joined, the visibility you want, and how the finished piece will be used. A limb or head that carries weight needs a secure join; a decorative piece may have different demands. The pattern and the shape of the parts matter more than a claim that one stitch is best for every seam.
- Open edges: Follow the pattern’s joining instructions and use the available edge stitches to make the seam.
- Already-closed pieces: Choose a seam that can catch stitches securely on both pieces while giving the intended finish.
- Visible seams: Match the yarn and maintain even tension to keep the join tidy.
- Weight-bearing or flexible joins: Prioritize a secure seam and follow any construction guidance in the pattern.
When to install safety eyes
Safety eyes with interior washers generally need to be fitted while you can still reach the inside of the crochet fabric to attach the backing. Confirm the position from the front before locking the washer, since repositioning can be difficult afterward. The pattern may call for a different sequence, so check it before stuffing or closing the head.

Whether a finished toy is suitable for a child depends on its intended use and the applicable safety requirements. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) says that children’s products intended for children under 3 that present a choking, aspiration, or ingestion hazard because of small parts are banned hazardous substances. Its small-parts guidance explains that a small part is assessed by whether it fits entirely into a small-parts cylinder and also addresses parts that break off during simulated use-and-abuse testing.

For a toy intended for a child under 3, consider embroidered features instead of attached components, and do not assume that an item called a “safety eye” is safe for every child or toy.
