You can personalize over-ear headphones with a knitted rainbow cover, but the fit and attachment depend on the specific headphones. Measure the headband and earcups first, choose a dense fabric suited to your chosen pattern, and keep yarn clear of speakers, controls, hinges, ports, and cables. The 2015 Make article “DIY Knitted Rainbow Headphones” describes Becca Rose’s knitted-cover project, but its exact pattern instructions are not available here; the steps below are a practical planning guide, not a reconstruction of that pattern.
What this project is—and what it is not
A knitted headphone cover customizes existing over-ear headphones; it does not build or modify their electronics. Rainbow colors are a design choice: you can arrange stripes in any sequence that suits your yarn and the pieces you plan to cover.

#1 Best Overall
- 【Protection】Crafted from a breathable knit cotton blend, these Knit Headphone Ear Covers act as a barrier against sweat, dust, and makeup residue. The wrap-around design fully covers ear pad edges, helping guard against scrapes from nails or jewelry and extending the headphone's lifespan.
- 【Universal Fit】Designed to fit ear pads ranging from 8cm (3.1in) when relaxed to 13cm (5.1in) when stretched, these Washable Ear Pad Covers feature an elastic edge that offers a secure grip on both round and oval earcups. The design prevents slippage during workouts or active use while maintaining sound clarity.
- 【Durable Fabric】Made of soft and elastic knit cotton, these Washable Ear Pad Covers balance comfort with stretchability. The fabric remains breathable to reduce ear heat during extended wear and adapts snugly to various ear pad sizes without losing shape.
- 【Year Round Comfort】The moisture-wicking cotton layer in these Knit Headphone Ear Covers absorbs sweat during exercise, while the lightweight fabric prevents overheating in warm conditions. In cooler settings, the covers provide a thin insulating layer without bulk, enhancing comfort during long listening sessions.
- 【Easy Maintenance】These Washable Ear Pad Covers are machine washable in cold water (30°C) with mild detergent to remove sweat and odors, then air-dried for reuse. The covers retain shape and elasticity after repeated washing. For stubborn stains, spot clean with a soft brush and air dry flat. Store conveniently in a mesh pouch.
Choose a construction approach
| Approach | What the available instructions establish | Fit and attachment considerations |
|---|---|---|
| Knitted cover | Grace Ann’s separate Ravelry tutorial, “Yarny Headphones – A Tutorial,” lists about 30 yards of worsted-weight yarn, size 3 needles or needles that produce a dense fabric, a foot of strong fingering-weight yarn, and a mini screwdriver. It describes the instructions as a recipe to customize for different headphone models. | Measure your own headphones and adapt the recipe. The screwdriver is part of that tutorial’s example; it is not a universal requirement. |
| Button-fastened crochet cover | Stacy Pamela’s “Rainbow With Clouds Headphones Cover,” published in June 2015, is a crochet pattern, not a knitting pattern. Its Ravelry listing gives a 3.75 mm hook, a listed gauge of 9 single crochet stitches by 11 rows in a 2-inch square, worsted-weight 100% cotton yarn, and nine buttons measuring 1/2 to 3/4 inch. The listing labels it intermediate. | The listing says it fits Sony MDR-ZX110 headphones or most headphones with earcups about 2.5 inches wide by 1 inch thick. Those dimensions are a reminder to check fit, not a guarantee for other models. |
The crochet pattern’s hook, gauge, yarn specification, buttons, and fit details do not transfer automatically to a knitted cover.
Plan the cover around your headphones
Measure the parts you intend to cover
Record the headband’s length and width, plus each earcup’s width, thickness, and shape. Check where the earcups swivel and where the headband bends. Covers that fit one model may not fit another, and measurements help you decide whether a pattern needs adapting.

Choose yarn and needles for a dense fabric
Follow the needle size and yarn weight in the knitted pattern you are actually using, then check that the resulting fabric is dense enough for the cover. Grace Ann’s size 3 needle and worsted-weight yarn combination is one tutorial’s example, not a universal specification. If the instructions allow a gauge swatch, use it to assess both fabric density and dimensions before making the full cover.

Plan an attachment that holds the cover in place without pulling on cables or obstructing moving parts. Some designs may be fitted over the headphones without taking them apart. Grace Ann’s tutorial includes a mini screwdriver for disassembling its example headphones, but do not assume disassembly is necessary or appropriate for yours. If a cover design requires opening the headphones, check the manufacturer’s guidance before proceeding.

Map the rainbow and manage yarn ends
Choose a stripe order and decide where color changes will fall before you begin. Weave ends securely so they do not loosen during use, and avoid bulky joins where the cover touches the wearer. The precise stripe sequence is a design decision unless you are following a specific pattern.
Work carefully around openings and moving parts
- Keep fabric and loose yarn away from speaker openings, controls, ports, and cables.
- Leave hinges and swivel joints free to move; a cover that catches or stretches across them can interfere with adjustment.
- Make sure the finished cover does not prevent the earcups from sitting comfortably or the headband from adjusting.
- Check the cover’s placement periodically for loosened ends or shifting fabric.
These are practical precautions. The cited listings do not report testing or quantify how a knitted cover affects sound.
