Chinese New Year’s Eve in 2025 fell on January 28; the Spring Festival’s first day was January 29. For 2025 Chinese New Year’s Eve pictures, start with the dated Xinhua galleries: one captures reunion meals, while another shows people working through the holiday eve. The collections below also include pre-holiday lantern scenes and a broader international selection, clearly distinguished by date.

Photos from Chinese New Year’s Eve 2025

Xinhua’s reunion-dinner gallery was published January 29 and shows scenes photographed on January 28, New Year’s Eve. Its captions document family meals in Zhejiang, restaurant dining in Nanjing and Wuhu, chefs preparing food in Jiaxing, and firefighters sharing a meal at a Taizhou fire station. The gallery also includes a God of Wealth character at a Nanjing restaurant.

For a view beyond the dinner table, Xinhua’s Lunar New Year’s Eve gallery records people working and maintaining services on January 28. Captions include technology company staff and Qilian Mountain National Park rangers; one shows a ranger placing the character “Fu,” associated with good luck, on her office window.

Choose a gallery by date and subject

Gallery Date and scope What it shows
Xinhua reunion dinners Published Jan. 29; captions identify Jan. 28 scenes Family and restaurant meals, food preparation, and a fire-station dinner in several Chinese locations
Xinhua on-duty scenes Jan. 28 People working during the eve, including technology workers and park rangers
Xinhua lantern scenes Published Jan. 20; captions date scenes to Jan. 18–19 Lantern buying, a lantern fair, and Spring Festival light installations
Associated Press Lunar New Year collection Published Jan. 24; 53 photographs across the holiday period Scenes from locations including Beijing, Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok, Indonesia, and Havana; captions include both lead-up and first-day celebrations

If the exact date matters, read the caption for each photograph: a gallery may span several days, and its publication date does not necessarily match the date a scene was photographed.

What counts as an eve picture?

The distinction is simple but important: January 28 was Chinese New Year’s Eve in 2025, while January 29 was the first day of the Spring Festival. Shanghai’s municipal guide describes the eve as a time for families to prepare a year-end feast and share a reunion dinner. It names meatballs, egg dumplings, and eight-treasure rice pudding as familiar Shanghai examples associated with reunion or prosperity; these are regional examples, not a universal holiday menu. Shanghai’s guide to the 2025 celebration provides that local context.

Not every striking holiday image was made on New Year’s Eve. Xinhua’s lantern collection was published before the holiday, and its captions place the pictured scenes on January 18–19. Similarly, Hong Kong’s government scheduled its 2025 fireworks display for January 30, the second day of the Chinese New Year—not the eve. Its announcement described a planned display of 23,888 shells lasting about 23 minutes. The Hong Kong government announcement is useful if you want fireworks from the wider holiday period, but those images should not be labeled New Year’s Eve pictures.

Check captions, credits, and image-use terms

  • Confirm the date: distinguish January 28 eve scenes from pre-holiday decorations and January 29 first-day celebrations.
  • Match the subject: the Xinhua collections offer meal and on-duty scenes; the lantern and AP collections provide seasonal decorations or a wider international mix.
  • Keep the credit with the image: retain the original publisher’s caption and photographer credit when displaying a photograph.
  • Verify permission before republication: the galleries cited here do not state reuse rights. An image being viewable in an editorial gallery does not itself grant permission to copy or republish it; check the original publisher’s terms for the specific image.

These galleries are examples, not a complete record of how Chinese communities around the world marked the occasion.
