Shiwasu (師走) is the traditional Japanese name for the twelfth month, originally the twelfth month of the lunar calendar. It is still used as a traditional name for December today. The familiar explanation that the word means “priests run” is one proposed origin, not a settled etymology.
What does Shiwasu mean?
Shiwasu is a traditional month name associated with December in modern Japan. Historically, it referred to the twelfth month of the lunar calendar; after Japan adopted the solar calendar in the Meiji era, it continued as a traditional name for Gregorian December. The National Diet Library’s account of traditional month names explains that their seasonal associations come from the older calendar.
That distinction matters when reading older references: the lunar month did not line up exactly with modern December, and the seasonal timing of traditional month names can be one or two months out of step with today’s calendar. The name’s current association with December does not mean historical dates or customs occurred at precisely the same point in the modern calendar.

Why is December called Shiwasu?
The best-known explanation links the characters 師走 to Buddhist teachers or monks (師) hurrying between homes to perform religious services, such as reciting sutras. It is a familiar interpretation, but not a confirmed literal meaning or proven origin.
The National Diet Library’s cultural record of Shiwasu also notes other proposed derivations: shihatsu, understood as the month when the four seasons end, and toshi hatsu, meaning that the year ends. The word’s origin remains uncertain, so the “priests run” story is best presented as one traditional explanation among several.

What preparations and customs are associated with Shiwasu?
New Year preparations and susuharai
The National Diet Library’s account of Shiwasu customs describes kotohajime, the beginning of preparations for the New Year, and susuharai, the year-end cleaning of soot and dirt from the home. Cleaning had a cultural role beyond routine housekeeping: it helped prepare the home to welcome the New Year. These are historical descriptions, not evidence that every household follows the same customs today.
Toshinoichi, the year-end markets
Toshinoichi, or year-end markets, sold New Year decorations and seasonal goods. The NDL account names items including shimekazari (decorative rope ornaments), osechi-ryori (New Year foods), hagoita boards, kites, brooms, and calendars. The range shows that the markets served both festive preparations and practical needs.

Accounts and debts in Edo-era commerce
The Japan Search / National Diet Library record also describes year-end debt collection and unsettled accounts in Edo-era commercial life. This belongs to that historical setting; it should not be treated as a defining feature of modern December.
