Browse free Christmas pictures on Unsplash’s Christmas collection, search Unsplash Christmas images, or explore Pixabay’s Christmas photos. For another free-image library, see Pexels’ license page. Check each result’s price label and license before downloading or reusing it: search pages can include premium or sponsored placements, and free access does not make an image public domain.

Where to find free Christmas pictures

Unsplash

Unsplash’s Christmas collection gathers seasonal imagery such as Christmas trees, snow, lights, and meals. Its Christmas search page also offers photo and illustration categories and related searches including holiday, festive, winter, decoration, Christmas tree, Merry Christmas, xmas, and advent. Inspect the labels on individual results: the page includes Unsplash+ and sponsored entries alongside free images.

Pixabay

Pixabay’s Christmas search is another place to browse downloadable seasonal photos. Related terms such as Christmas tree and Merry Christmas can help narrow the results. Sponsored iStock placements may appear, so check that a result is available free before selecting it.

Pexels

Pexels’ license page says its photos and videos are free to download and use. The page reviewed here is general licensing guidance, rather than a verified Christmas-specific collection; search Pexels for the subject you want and check the terms that apply to the selected image.

How to choose the right Christmas image

Start with the intended use and visual need, then compare the actual results. Search phrases such as “Christmas background,” “Christmas tree pictures,” “festive,” “winter,” or “holiday” can help find a particular subject or mood, but tags do not tell you whether reuse is permitted.

  • Subject and style: Decide whether you need a tree, lights, snow, a festive meal, or a general seasonal background.
  • Free or premium: Read the individual result’s label before downloading; a free-image search page may also show paid or sponsored items.
  • Orientation and size: Check the dimensions and available download options on the image page against where you intend to use it. Availability varies by result.
  • Rights and context: Review the platform license and consider whether identifiable people, brands, property, or other third-party rights affect your planned use.

What the image licenses allow—and restrict

The following is a practical summary of the platforms’ published terms, not a guarantee that any particular image is free of other rights. Check the current full terms and the image’s context, especially for consequential commercial use.

Platform What the platform says Important restrictions
Unsplash Images may be downloaded and used free for commercial and non-commercial purposes. Attribution is not required, though appreciated. You may not sell images without significant modification or compile them to replicate a competing service. Read the Unsplash License.
Pexels Photos and videos are free to use; attribution is not required, and modification is allowed. Do not sell unaltered copies, redistribute content on stock or wallpaper platforms, imply endorsement, or use imagery as a trademark or business mark. Identifiable people must not be portrayed offensively or in a bad light. Read the Pexels License.
Pixabay Content may be used free, without attribution, and modified or adapted. Do not sell or distribute content on a standalone basis. Recognizable marks or brands and other third-party intellectual-property, privacy, or similar rights may require additional permission. Pixabay states: “You cannot sell or distribute Content (either in digital or physical form) on a Standalone basis.” Read the Pixabay License Summary.

These licenses describe platform permissions; they do not establish that every image is public domain or clear of model, property, trademark, copyright, privacy, or other rights. Pixabay explicitly notes that users may need to check for additional rights. For a commercial project, review the current platform terms and the specific picture before relying on it.

Before you download or reuse a picture

  1. Open the Christmas collection or search page for the image library you want to use.
  2. Check the result’s label and image page to confirm whether it is free, and review the available size and orientation.
  3. Read the platform’s current license, paying particular attention to resale, redistribution, endorsement, trademark, and standalone-use restrictions.
  4. Assess the image itself for identifiable people, brands, property, or other rights that could matter for your intended use.
  5. Save the source page and license details with the image so you can refer back to them if your use changes.
