The sacred lotus (Nelumbo nucifera) is an aquatic perennial that grows from rhizomes in wetland mud and sends its leaves and flowers above the water. It is not a water lily: the two plants look similar but belong to different botanical groups. The lotus is grown as an ornamental, eaten in several food traditions, and holds religious and cultural significance across parts of Asia.
What is a lotus flower?
“Lotus flower” commonly refers to sacred lotus, Nelumbo nucifera. Its rhizomes grow in the mud at the bottom of shallow water. Large, round leaves sit at or rise above the surface, while white or pink flowers stand above the water. The flower centre develops into a distinctive seed head. The leaf surface repels water, a property behind the term “lotus effect.” See Kew’s sacred lotus profile and its Plants of the World Online profile.
Lotus and water lily are not the same plant
Despite their resemblance, sacred lotus is not a water lily. Water lilies belong to the family Nymphaeaceae; Kew describes lotus as distantly related to them and more closely related to plane trees and macadamia. The visual similarity is why the names are sometimes confused, but they are not interchangeable botanical identifications.

Its native range extends across warm-temperate to tropical parts of Asia and northeast Australia. It grows in shallow ponds and lakes, marshes, floodplains, lagoons, and flooded fields. Singapore’s NParks profile likewise describes lotus growing from mud in freshwater ponds. Kew also records introduced populations in places including parts of the United States and Europe; those locations are outside its native range.

How to grow lotus from seed or division
Lotus can be propagated by seed or by dividing rhizomes. For seed, the Royal Horticultural Society recommends spring sowing, scarification, warmth, and a shallow covering of water. Kew reports successful propagation at Kew by both seed sowing and division.
Start lotus from seed
- In spring, scarify the seed carefully to help water penetrate its hard coat. Avoid damaging the seed itself.
- Sow it in a small container of loam and cover the surface with about 5 cm (2 in) of water.
- Keep the container at a minimum temperature of 25°C (77°F), as specified in the RHS growing guidance.
Propagate by division
Division is another option, but the growing tips on lotus rhizomes are easily damaged. Kew advises care when dividing; the Kew profile records both division and seed sowing as successful methods.

- Fill guide - a single pack of aquatic soil covers the base of a 6-8 inch planter - it seems thin while dry but swells once wet, so build up gradually.
- How to use - before use, add water and stir thoroughly, then let it stand for 2-3 hours. Once the mud has settled, pour off the dirty water. Repeat this process twice, and then you can plant. We recommend covering the surface with pebbles or gravel to prevent cloudy water when adding water.
- Medium only - germinated stock, tubers and potted starts are not included; it is the bedding they grow into.
- Hand-screened - a fine, even grain with the natural humus content that seedlings feed on. A cloudy look right away is normal - leave the setup alone and it clears within a day or two.
- Ideal for - indoor and outdoor aquatic plant pots, including lotus, water lilies, and water hyacinths; small backyard water features; goldfish ponds; freshwater aquascapes; also beginner-friendly.
Choosing seeds
For planting, look for seeds identified as Nelumbo nucifera. If a listing names a cultivar, check whether it is selling seed or a plant: seed-grown offspring should not be assumed to reproduce a named cultivar’s traits. Kew reports that the species has been cultivated in China for more than 3,000 years; that history does not indicate how long a particular seed will take to germinate or how it will perform in a home garden.
How long do lotus flowers bloom?
Individual flowers in the Missouri Botanical Garden’s collection remain effective for about a week, while the collection’s peak flowering period lasts about two weeks as buds open at different times. These are observations of that collection, not a guaranteed schedule for every lotus, cultivar, or growing climate. The garden’s lotus notes provide the context for those figures.

Can you eat lotus root and seeds?
Yes. The edible rhizome—often called lotus root—is eaten roasted, pickled, candied, sliced, or fried, and is used in soups and stir-fries. Seeds are eaten fresh or dried and used in foods such as mooncake filling and seed paste. Leaves, stalks, and flowers are also eaten in some regional traditions. Kew and Singapore NParks describe these culinary uses in their species profile, taxonomic profile, and NParks profile.
Food use is different from evidence of medical effectiveness. Lotus has a place in traditional medicine, but accounts of traditional use do not establish that it treats or prevents disease. NParks notes a lack of strong clinical evidence for certain traditional uses in its profile.

What does the lotus flower symbolize?
Meanings vary by religious and cultural context. Kew describes associations with purity and divinity in Buddhist and Hindu traditions, and with the sun and fertility in Hinduism. Lotus thrones also appear in East Asian religious artwork. These are tradition-specific associations, not a single meaning shared universally by every community. Kew reports the species as Data Deficient on the IUCN Red List. The classification should not be read as either a threat finding or a clean bill of health.
