Christmas balls—also called baubles—are spherical ornaments hung on Christmas trees. Choose among glass, plastic, wood and fabric based on the look you want, where the ornament will hang, and how carefully it needs to be handled. For a six-foot tree, one Australian retailer suggests about 70–80 baubles for a classic look or 100–120 for a denser display; those are planning estimates, not a universal rule.

What are Christmas balls?
Christmas balls are round decorative ornaments, most often used on Christmas trees. They may be plain or decorated, and their appearance depends on both material and finish. The name “bauble” is commonly used for the same kind of ornament.
Which material should you choose?

How many baubles do you need for a tree?
Christmas World’s guide, published September 23, 2026, offers a rough planning estimate of about 12 baubles per foot of tree height for a classic look, or 18–20 per foot for a denser style. It estimates about 70–80 for a six-foot tree with a classic look and 100–120 for a fuller one. These are the retailer’s styling estimates, not an industry standard. Tree width matters too: a wide tree may need more ornaments than a slim tree of the same height.
If you already have ornaments, decorate in stages and step back to check the overall balance before adding more. A mix of sizes can create depth: Christmas World suggests placing larger baubles farther inside the branches and smaller ones nearer the tips.
What size Christmas balls work well?
Christmas World lists common bauble diameters from 40 mm to 120 mm and describes 60 mm and 80 mm sizes as common on a standard six- to seven-foot tree. Treat that as retailer guidance rather than a fixed sizing rule. Consider the width of the tree and the scale of nearby decorations, and mix sizes if you want visual depth.

How do you choose and place ornaments around children or pets?
For homes with small children or pets, placement matters as much as material. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission advises: “Avoid placing breakable ornaments or ornaments with small detachable parts on lower branches where small children or pets can reach them and knock them off.” The American Academy of Pediatrics likewise advises avoiding sharp or breakable decorations in homes with small children and keeping trimmings with small removable parts out of reach to prevent swallowing or inhalation.

- Check ornaments for loose pieces before hanging them, especially on accessible branches.
- Choose a product based on its actual construction; a “shatterproof” or fabric description does not establish that it has no small parts.
- Handle ornaments carefully when unpacking, decorating and packing away.
The CPSC’s 1977 holiday-safety release reported 2,200 emergency-room-treated injuries related to accidents with holiday decorations between November 1, 1976, and January 31, 1977; more than half involved children under 15. That historical figure covers decorations broadly, including trees and lights, and is not a current estimate or a statistic specific to Christmas balls.

Christmas World recommends wrapping glass baubles individually in tissue paper and storing them in a padded box with dividers, in a cool, dry location. Separating ornaments helps prevent them from knocking together in storage. Take care when unpacking and repacking as well; the CPSC includes careful handling during those tasks in its holiday safety advice.

Where did glass Christmas balls come from?
The Corning Museum of Glass describes Lauscha, Germany, as a center of glass ornament production for centuries. According to the museum, glassblowers heated glass tubes and used a small puff of air to expand them into bubbles, which could then be shaped and decorated.
In the United States, Max Eckhart founded The Shiny Brite Company in 1937. The Corning Museum says that during certain months a Corning Glass Works ribbon machine originally used for lightbulbs made ornaments, which were sent to New Jersey for decoration. The museum dates its collection of machine-made, enameled and silvered Shiny Brite ornaments to approximately 1938–1960.
