A Roblox character can mean your customizable player avatar, but it can also mean any character model inside a Roblox experience, including a non-player character (NPC) or a developer-built custom character. For ordinary players, the official Marketplace is the main place to find avatar bodies, heads, clothing, accessories, and animations; creator tools are for building or testing custom assets, not a requirement for changing your avatar.
What is a Roblox character?
In everyday use, “Roblox character” usually refers to a player’s avatar: a customizable 3D representation of the user. Roblox describes avatars as carrying cosmetics, clothing, and accessories across games on the platform. That persistence is subject to individual experience settings, so an experience may use a custom character or otherwise handle avatars differently. See Roblox’s avatar documentation.
In creator documentation, “character” is broader. It can mean a humanoid or other model that moves, communicates, and interacts in an experience. A game’s characters may include player avatars, custom player rigs, and NPCs. Roblox’s character documentation covers this creator-facing meaning.
How do you customize a Roblox avatar?
Use the official Roblox Marketplace, available on the web and in the Roblox app, to find avatar bodies, heads, clothes, accessories, animations, and other cosmetic items. Catalog availability and individual item prices can change. Roblox’s Marketplace overview describes the catalog.

Avatar appearance is more than a list of cosmetics: it involves body geometry, rigging, animation, attachment points, and cage meshes that help clothing and accessories fit and move with the avatar. Two accessory types behave differently:
- Rigid accessories attach to a point on the body.
- Layered accessories fit over the body and can stretch to accommodate its shape.
Roblox reported that users purchased 2.2 billion avatar items in 2024, according to a 2025 Roblox Brands resource. That is a count of items, not unique buyers: How to Set Up Shop on Roblox.

Which customization route should you use?

Roblox’s Avatar Editor Service documentation explains how developers can build in-experience editors that search Marketplace items and save outfits. These editors require user permission to access inventory.

Creators can make custom bodies and accessories in 3D tools such as Blender or Maya, then import assets into Roblox Studio. Roblox’s Accessory Fitting Tool lets creators test custom models against combinations of bodies, animations, and accessories; it is a development aid, not a step players need for ordinary avatar editing. Are Roblox character toys the same as digital avatar items?
No. Roblox-themed toys are physical products, while Marketplace bodies, clothing, and accessories are digital items. Roblox Support says the Roblox/Jazwares toy collection includes redeemable codes for exclusive virtual items, but its toy information page does not establish current stock or whether a code offered with a particular toy is still valid. Check the listing and code status before buying; a toy is optional and is not needed to customize an avatar.
Roblox’s May 15, 2025 announcement described plans for in-experience shopping for physical merchandise, Commerce APIs, Shopify as its first integration partner, and an Approved Merchandiser Program. That announcement concerns physical commerce and does not make physical products the route for changing a digital avatar: Roblox’s commerce announcement.
