“Pharaonic pictures” is not a clearly identified title or single collection; here it means pictures of ancient Egypt. The phrase can refer to original tomb paintings, modern copies of those paintings, photographs of tombs or artifacts, or contemporary illustrations. Those are different kinds of images, so check what you are looking at before interpreting or reusing it.
What counts as a pharaonic picture?
The label can describe several visually related but historically distinct things:
- Ancient painting: imagery preserved on the walls of an Egyptian tomb. It belongs to its original site and historical context.
- Facsimile: a later, carefully made copy of a tomb scene, often intended to record its color and brushwork.
- Photograph: a camera record of a tomb, wall painting, or artifact. A photograph may preserve the surrounding setting or isolate a detail.
- Modern illustration or stock image: a contemporary depiction inspired by ancient Egyptian art. It is not itself an ancient artifact or documentary record.
When sharing or studying an image, identify its medium and date where known, and name the original tomb or site if the image documents one.
What tomb paintings show
Pharaonic art is not limited to portraits of rulers, pyramids, or monumental objects. Museum descriptions of tomb scenes include burial practices and ceremonies as well as everyday activities, animals, and plants. A scene can therefore offer evidence about beliefs and daily life, not just royal history.

Context matters: a close crop may make a figure or motif easier to see, while an image of a larger wall or tomb setting can show how that detail fits into a complete scene.
Why facsimiles and photographs matter
Tomb imagery is fragile, and its condition can change. Before color photography, tempera copies provided a way to document wall paintings. The Metropolitan Museum of Art says some tombs were better preserved when copied in the 1920s and 1930s than they are today. Its paper facsimiles were made in tempera during the 1920s, 1930s, and 1940s to bring tomb imagery back for study and exhibition.

The Met’s Egyptian Expedition Graphic Section documented tombs in Western Thebes, in modern Luxor, including royal tombs, officials’ tombs, and artists’ tombs at Deir el-Medina. From 1907 to 1941, the team completed some 350 facsimiles, alongside photographic records made by Harry Burton (1879–1940). The painted copies and photographs are complementary records; neither is the original wall painting.
The distinction is visible in the medium as well as the date. A facsimile records a scene through an artist’s hand, while a photograph records it through a camera and may show it in its original setting. Read the caption before treating either as an ancient object.

How to identify and choose an image
- Check what the image is. Look for terms such as original tomb painting, facsimile, photograph, or modern illustration.
- Find the attribution. Prefer captions that identify the tomb or site and the maker or documenting institution.
- Check the date. An image may depict an ancient scene but be a twentieth-century copy or photograph. Keep the date of the reproduced work separate from the date of the original art.
- Consider the framing. A whole-scene view can preserve spatial context; a detail can make small figures, colors, or marks easier to inspect.
- Check reproduction rights. If you plan to download, publish, or adapt an image, read the license for that specific asset and the permitted uses.
Finding pictures and checking reuse rights
Image libraries such as Unsplash, Shutterstock, and Depositphotos can help surface contemporary or historical imagery. A search page does not establish that every result is free to reuse, nor that an image is an ancient original. Check the individual asset’s attribution and current license before using it, especially for publication or commercial purposes.
For historically grounded examples, the Met’s account of its Egyptian Expedition facsimiles and its collection entry for a facsimile from the tomb of Nebamun and Ipuky help distinguish copied tomb art from the ancient painting it records. Its publication page for Tutankhamun: His Tomb and Its Treasures describes a book combining original photographs made in the 1920s with modern color photographs of objects from the tomb; the page labels the book out of print.
