Guru Ram Rai Darbar Sahib is known for murals that bring religious stories, courtly figures and everyday life together on the walls of an active Dehradun religious institution. The phrase “richest treasure” captures their visual and historical value; no reliable comparative ranking or authoritative total mural count is established.

Why is Guru Ram Rai Darbar Sahib famous for its murals?

The murals are significant both as devotional art and as a record of changing life in the Doon Valley. The shrine’s official account describes images of deities, saints, sages and religious stories alongside flowers, animals, birds and trees. It identifies Rajasthani, Mughal and Pahari traditions in the paintings, with Kangra-Guler influence apparent in the colors of arches and the treatment of faces.

That variety makes the walls more than a sequence of religious illustrations. In an India Foundation for the Arts interview, filmmaker and researcher Shashwati Talukdar describes the murals as spanning the late seventeenth to early twentieth century. She reads them as successive layers of social and cultural history, rather than a single scene from one period.

What do the murals show?

Religious stories and natural motifs

The shrine’s description includes Hindu gods and goddesses, saints, sages and episodes from religious narratives. Floral patterns, animals, birds and trees extend the painted world beyond human figures and sacred stories.

People from the valley’s changing society

Talukdar points to merchants, peons, chaprasis, munshis and guards among the figures, as well as Mughal emperors and British lords and ladies. These are examples in her interpretation, not a complete inventory of every image. The combination of religious and secular subjects makes the murals a visual record of social change as well as a devotional ensemble.

Talukdar also discusses paintings of Guru Ram Rai and Aurangzeb in conversation. She sees that pairing as more complex than a simple story of domination. It is her reading of the imagery; the paintings alone should not be treated as proof of broad claims about Mughal policy or religious history.

When was the Darbar Sahib built, and how is it connected to Dehradun?

According to the Darbar Sahib’s institutional history, Guru Ram Rai, eldest son of the seventh Sikh Guru, Har Rai, established a dera in the Doon Valley in 1676. The institution connects the settlement called “Dera” in the “Dun” valley with the later name Dehradun. This is the shrine’s origin account.

The same account dates completion of the present Darbar Sahib building to 1707. Its biographical history says Guru Ram Rai died in 1687, after which Mata Punjab Kaur managed the institution and established the Mahant tradition. These dates are the institution’s account of its history.

Who restored the murals, and what is their condition now?

The Darbar Sahib says that large-scale repair and restoration has been undertaken to preserve its murals. A Times of India report published November 21, 2014 described an Archaeological Survey of India restoration phase completed around 2010 and said management planned to fund remaining work. The article also recorded concerns at the time about water damage, seepage, soot, earlier physical damage and the longevity of materials.

That report is historical, not a current condition assessment: it does not establish whether planned work was completed or what condition the murals are in today. The ASI’s Dehradun Circle page describes its remit for managing and conserving centrally protected monuments and sites in Uttarakhand, but does not confirm that Darbar Sahib is currently among them. Current visitor hours, photography rules and access arrangements are not established here.

How the murals remain part of a living institution

The Darbar Sahib is not only a heritage site. Its official page says nearly 1,000 people partake of prasad daily; the page does not date that estimate. The ongoing community role gives the painted setting a life beyond its value as a historical collection.
