Fordite is hardened, layered automotive paint buildup from older paint shops. Overspray collected on factory equipment and was repeatedly baked during paint curing; cut and polished, the colorful material can become jewelry and other objects. Despite the nickname “Detroit agate,” fordite is man-made, not a natural gemstone.
How did fordite form?
In older automotive paint shops, overspray accumulated on tracks, skids and other fixtures used to carry or support car bodies. Those surfaces passed through paint-curing ovens again and again, hardening successive coats into stacked layers. Fordite.com describes some deeper layers as having been baked many times; the Detroit Institute of Arts Museum Shop says the buildup could reach several inches. These are descriptions of the material’s history, not standardized measurements for every piece.
The classic buildup is associated with older, overspray-heavy factory methods. As production shifted toward electrostatic painting and automated processes, that kind of accumulation became less common. Fordite.com describes modern electrostatic painting as producing little or no overspray, while Mini Museum says newer material can still be found. The available accounts do not establish that every modern factory produces none.
Why does fordite look like agate?
When fordite is cut and polished, the cross-section exposes bands, swirls and changes in color formed by successive paint layers. The nickname “Motor Agate” or “Detroit Agate” refers to this layered appearance; it does not mean the material is a natural agate or mineral.

Color and pattern can make a piece visually distinctive, but appearance alone cannot establish its factory, age or authenticity. A seller’s attribution is not independent proof, and the sources cited here do not identify a validated, general-purpose test for authenticating fordite.
What is fordite used for?
Fordite is cut and polished into jewelry and other objects. Museum and specialty-shop descriptions include pendants and specimens for display, as well as collections associated with automotive makes or particular plants. Those examples show how the material is used; they do not mean every piece has documented factory provenance or that a particular item is currently available.

How to assess a fordite piece
If you are considering a piece as jewelry or a collectible, assess the object rather than relying on a color or a broad origin story.
- Ask what the provenance claim rests on. Look for documentation tying that specific piece to a plant or collection. Treat an unsupported seller attribution as a claim, not verification.
- Review photographs of the actual item. Check its layered pattern, condition and any visible differences between the listing photos and the item description.
- Separate the material from the finished object. A rough piece and a polished cabochon set in jewelry differ in cutting and workmanship; evaluate the setting as well as the fordite.
- Do not use color as a date or factory test. The visible pattern is consistent with layered paint, but color alone does not prove where or when a piece formed.
For marketplace searches, search for fordite jewelry and check the seller’s description, item-specific photographs and any provenance documentation. A product page for a fordite pendant establishes that this is a type of item sold, not that a current listing is available or independently authenticated. The Detroit Institute of Arts Museum Shop also describes fordite collections, including its Vintage Rouge collection.
