For the classic soft, fluffy fringe of a rag quilt, choose 100% cotton flannel. Quilting cotton is a good alternative if you want more print options or a less prominent ragged edge. Flannel is not required, but fiber content, the fabric’s reverse side, and your chosen pattern all affect the result.
Which fabrics work for a rag quilt?
Rag quilts are made with exposed seam allowances that are clipped and then fray, especially after washing. For a traditional cotton fringe, use a woven fabric with 100% cotton fiber content. Moda’s Fast, Fun Summer Rag Quilt Project Pattern recommends 100% cotton woven fabrics for frayed-edge techniques. A specialist maker also recommends cotton and cautions that polyester-rich materials will not produce the same fluffy fray.
100% cotton flannel
Cotton flannel is a strong starting point when softness and a cozy, fluffy seam edge are the priorities. Missouri Star Quilt Company lists flannel as a suitable rag-quilt fabric in its How to Make a Rag Quilt: A Beginner’s Guide. Check the label to confirm the fiber content rather than assuming every fabric sold as flannel is 100% cotton.

Quilting cotton
Quilting cotton is also suitable; flannel is not a requirement. It can be a practical choice when you want a wider range of printed designs. The author of A Vision to Remember’s guide to fabrics for rag quilts describes using quilting cotton for quilt tops and solid flannel for backing. That is one maker’s preference, not evidence that this combination is more durable or performs better overall.
Polyester-rich or plush fabrics
Polyester-rich and plush materials may feel soft, but they should not be expected to create the classic fluffy cotton fringe. A specialist tutorial notes that these materials do not fray like cotton. Consider them only if you prefer their feel or appearance over a traditional rag edge; no cited head-to-head test establishes how different blends will behave.

Compare fabrics by the result you want

Use four practical checks before buying: how full you want the fringe, how soft you want the quilt, what the print’s reverse will look like when exposed, and whether the fabric fits the instructions for your chosen pattern. These are selection considerations, not measured performance ratings.
Why the reverse side of a print matters
As the seam allowance frays, both sides of the fabric may become visible. Moda warns that some traditional prints show color on only one side, which can leave white visible in the ragged edge. If that contrast is not part of the look you want, choose solid fabric or a print colored on both sides. Woven fabrics and batiks are among the examples Moda gives.

Check the pattern before cutting
Seam allowance instructions are pattern-specific. Moda’s rag-quilt project calls for a 1/2-inch seam allowance; treat that as the instruction for that project, not a universal rag-quilt measurement. The Moda pattern also lists a quilting needle, rotary cutter, cutting mat, and acrylic ruler among its materials.
After sewing, the exposed allowances are clipped to encourage fraying. Missouri Star’s tutorial explains that washing helps the clipped edges bloom into the ragged seam effect. Because suitable wash settings depend on the fabric, batting, and product care labels, follow your pattern and the labels rather than relying on one temperature or method for every quilt. A specialist maker recommends prewashing in some situations to reduce concerns about shrinkage or color bleeding, but that is not a universal requirement established for all fabrics.
