Linen is fabric made from the stem fibers of the flax plant (Linum usitatissimum). The word describes a fiber, not a particular weave or finish: yarn, construction, blends, and finishing all affect how a linen textile feels and performs. To identify what a product contains, check its fiber-composition label rather than relying on a “linen-look” description.

What is linen made from?

Linen is made from flax’s bast fibers—the fibers found in the plant’s stem. The European Union’s textile-fiber regulation defines flax (linen) as “fibre obtained from the bast of the flax plant (Linum usitatissimum).” (Regulation (EU) No 1007/2011, Annex I)

Flax can also be grown for its seeds, but flaxseed and linen are not interchangeable terms: linen textile fiber comes from the stem, not the seed. The CFDA’s flax guide describes flax as a bast fiber.

How can you tell whether a product is linen?

Check the fiber-composition label. “Linen-look” describes an appearance and does not, by itself, establish that a product contains flax fiber. The CFDA cautions that “linen” is sometimes incorrectly used for other fibers with a similar look and feel. EU consumer guidance says textile composition is presented in descending order by percentage. See the European Commission’s textile-label guidance.

Some blends have specific legal naming rules. For example, under Regulation (EU) No 1007/2011, a fabric with pure cotton warp threads and pure flax weft threads may be designated “cotton linen union” with a composition specification if flax makes up at least 40% of the total weight of the unsized fabric. This is a rule for that defined construction, not a general naming rule for every linen blend. Read the regulation.

What does linen feel and how does it perform?

The CFDA characterizes flax as strong and stiff, relatively resistant to sunlight, quick-drying, able to absorb dye, and not prone to pilling. It also describes flax as thermoregulating. These are general fiber characteristics, not guarantees for every finished garment or household textile. Yarn, weave, fabric weight, blend, finish, and construction all influence the result.

For a specific product, consider its composition, construction, intended use, and care instructions together. A stonewashed finish, for example, may present differently from another finish, and a blend is not necessarily identical in feel or behavior to a product made wholly from flax. The Linen Lounge discusses these distinctions as practical material guidance, rather than as a regulated standard or controlled comparative test. Read its linen material guide.

Available sources do not establish controlled, product-by-product comparisons for softness, durability, or cooling. Treat those qualities as dependent on the particular textile rather than assuming a measurable advantage from the word “linen” alone.

What is linen used for?

Linen is used for apparel as well as household textiles, including bedding and table textiles. The household expression “linens” can refer to such goods; it is not a different definition of the fiber.

The CFDA’s 2021 guide reports that more than 70% of linen is used in clothing and that flax represents less than 1% of textile fibers consumed worldwide. The guide excerpt does not state the measurement year for either figure, so they should be read as figures reported in that 2021 guide—not as verified current market estimates. Is linen sustainable?

There is no basis here for calling every linen product sustainable as an unqualified claim. The CFDA describes flax as potentially lower-impact than some alternatives, while emphasizing that cultivation is only one stage of a linen garment’s lifecycle. Fiber extraction, processing, consumer use, and care can also contribute to impacts.

A meaningful environmental comparison needs to specify the products being compared, geography, lifecycle boundaries, and date. The available evidence does not establish a current, comparable lifecycle assessment for a particular linen product against cotton, polyester, or another textile. For a sourcing or environmental claim, look for evidence that clearly identifies what stage and product it covers.

How should you care for linen?

Follow the care label for the individual item. Fabric construction and finishing vary, and the available sources do not establish one universal washing temperature, drying method, or ironing setting for all linen goods. Do not assume a particular item will soften or shrink by a specific amount.

If you want to reduce creases, an iron or garment steamer may be an option if the item’s care instructions allow it; neither is necessary for every linen textile.
