To make a simple DIY clay Christmas tree, either wrap a rolled air-dry clay slab around a paper cone or shape the clay directly into a solid cone. The slab method creates a hollow tree with a seam to smooth; direct shaping skips the template. This guide focuses on air-dry clay, with a separate note on polymer clay’s oven-curing requirements.
Choose a clay-tree method
| Method | Form | What you do |
|---|---|---|
| Slab-wrapped | Hollow cone | Cut a curved slab, wrap it around a covered cardstock cone, then join and smooth the seam. |
| Directly shaped | Solid cone | Shape clay into a cone by hand, then paint or decorate it. |
The slab approach gives you a paper form to shape against but requires cutting and joining. Direct shaping is the simpler option if you want to avoid a seam. The available instructions do not establish a difference in cost, durability, or completion time.

- Air-dry clay
- Cardstock or similar paper to make a cone form
- Plastic wrap to cover the form
- A rolling pin
- A craft knife or another suitable cutting tool
- Water for joining and smoothing the seam
- Optional paint and decorations, such as beads or gems
A basic rolling pin and cutting tool are enough; use craft-specific tools if you have them, but the instructions do not require specialty equipment.
Make a hollow clay cone tree
- Make the form. Shape cardstock into a cone and cover it with plastic wrap. The paper supports the clay while the wrap helps keep the clay from sticking to the form.
- Roll the clay. Roll the air-dry clay into a slab. One tutorial specifies just under 1/4 inch thick; treat that as its project guidance, not a universal thickness for every clay or tree size.
- Cut the tree shape. Use a craft knife or equivalent tool to cut a curved shape from the slab, sized to wrap around the cone.
- Wrap and join. Place the slab around the covered cone form. Score one straight edge, bring the edges together, and press the seam closed while the clay is workable.
- Smooth the seam. Use a damp fingertip to blend the join and smooth bumps. Work gently so you do not distort the cone.
- Let the clay harden. Follow the instructions for your specific air-dry clay for drying and finishing; drying time is not the same for every product or project.
Shape a solid cone instead
For a simpler classroom-style tree, form the clay directly into a cone by hand and decorate it. You can press decorations into the clay while it is wet, or wait until it is dry and attach them with glue. This method does not use a cardstock form or require a slab seam.

Dry, paint, and decorate
Air-dry clay
Air-dry clay hardens without baking. Sculpey advises keeping unused clay sealed or wrapped and says its dried air-dry material can be painted with acrylic-based paints. Check the package for the selected product’s drying and finishing guidance rather than relying on a single drying-time estimate. See Sculpey’s air-dry clay guidance.
Polymer clay
Polymer clay is not interchangeable with air-dry clay: it must be cured according to the instructions for that particular product. Sculpey recommends preheating as directed, checking the oven temperature with an oven thermometer, and following the clay’s specified time and temperature. Do not transfer one brand’s settings to another. See Sculpey’s polymer-clay baking guide.

Finish and embellish
Paint is one straightforward finish. Beads, gems, pipe cleaners, and other collage materials can also decorate a tree; press suitable items into wet clay or glue them onto the hardened surface. A sealer is an optional maker’s finish, not a requirement established for every clay product.

A clay tree can be adapted into a luminary, but that is a variation rather than a requirement for the basic craft. The cited luminary project uses an LED votive. Choose an LED light rather than placing an open flame in or beside a handmade clay decoration.
