Choose paper by what the project needs to do: hold a shape, take paint or ink, fold cleanly, show a delicate effect, or make an inexpensive prototype. Copy paper, art paper, cardstock, construction paper, tissue paper, and origami paper cover many everyday craft jobs, but they are practical categories—not a complete list of specialty papers.
How to choose paper for a craft or prototype
- Start with structure. For a card, box, paper model, or stand-up part that must keep its shape, consider cardstock. For a rough pattern or small model, begin with a lighter sheet and refine the design before using specialty stock. Make describes cardstock as suitable for paper models and stand-up projects: Make: on choosing paper.
- Match the surface to the medium. Texture and finish affect how paper takes pencil, ink, and glue. Smooth cardstock is a useful choice for stamping and precise detail; a textured art paper can add visible surface character. Crafter’s Companion recommends heavier stock for structural blanks, boxes, and bags: Crafter’s Companion’s cardstock guide.
- Compare weight without treating it as a guarantee. GSM (grams per square metre) helps compare sheet weight, but it does not by itself establish stiffness, fold behavior, or compatibility with a particular printer, cutter, or technique. Crafter’s Companion’s 2026 recommendations are useful starting points, not universal specifications:
| Crafter’s Companion 2026 recommendation | Suggested uses |
|---|---|
| 80–120 gsm | Lightweight printing, inserts, and quilling |
| 120–180 gsm | Patterned layering and decorative backgrounds |
| 200–300 gsm | Die-cutting and embossing; recommendations overlap by technique |
| 300–350 gsm | Structural card blanks, boxes, and bags |
Check the sheet itself and your device’s material limits rather than assuming these ranges guarantee a result.
- Account for folds. Thicker stock may be harder to fold cleanly. Make recommends indenting the fold line with a dull point before folding to create a sharper crease.
- Try a sheet before committing to a pack. Test the intended paint, ink, glue, or folding technique on individual sheets first. Texas Art Supply recommends testing materials and techniques before buying in bulk: Texas Art Supply’s paper guide.
Six common paper types and when to use them
Copy paper: patterns, printing, and rough models
Copy paper is smooth and familiar, making it useful for handwriting, printing, templates, and small paper models. It is a low-cost way to iterate a pattern or rough prototype before switching to a specialty stock. It is less rigid than cardstock, so it is not the natural choice when a part must stand up or preserve a precise shape.

Art paper: visible texture and drawing or painting
Art paper is generally thicker and somewhat rough, and is intended for pencil, ink, and paint. Its surface can contribute character to a finished piece. Because papers vary in texture and finish, match the sheet to the medium and the look you want; art paper is generally more costly than everyday paper, according to Make.

Cardstock: cards and parts that need to hold their shape
Cardstock is stiff and smooth, which makes it useful for greeting cards, paper models, and stand-up building projects. It can also suit stamping and detailed cutting when the surface and weight work with the tool. Heavier stock may need a scored fold and can be harder to cut or bend; the weight ranges above are retailer recommendations, not a universal standard.
Construction paper: simple, colorful projects
Construction paper is soft, rough, and often brightly colored. It can work well for children’s pop-up cards and simple three-dimensional crafts. Its lower stiffness makes it a weaker option than cardstock when a prototype must retain a precise shape.

- Perfect Gift :best choice of origami paper,as a great gift for everyone who enjoy arts and crafts projects. This origami paper is not suitable for users under 18 and is intended for adult artistic creation.
Tissue paper: delicate layers and color effects
Tissue paper is very thin and often brightly colored. It can create faux stained-glass effects or color-run effects when dampened. Its delicacy is an advantage for those effects, but it is unsuitable when the project needs a firm structural sheet.
Origami paper: crisp folds and visible reverse sides
Origami paper is lightweight but stiff enough to hold a sharp crease. It may spring back if compressed after folding. Many sheets are colored or printed on only one side, so consider how the reverse will appear in the finished model.

Making a paper prototype stronger and neater
For a model or stand-up project, cardstock can provide more structure than a lightweight sheet. Make’s practical recommendations include scoring fold lines with a dull point, spreading ordinary white glue in a thin layer, layering sheets to strengthen a model, and alternating grain where possible. These are construction suggestions, not guarantees of strength: a paper prototype does not establish how a final product will perform or how durable its materials will be.

The six types above do not cover every craft use. Tracing paper and vellum can provide translucent surfaces for overlays or design transfer, while kraft paper is an inexpensive option that Texas Art Supply describes as not archival. “Vellum” can refer either to translucent drafting paper or to a different, opaque drawing paper, so check the specific product rather than relying on the name alone. See Texas Art Supply’s paper guide for these adjacent options.
