Pressed flowers make delicate, personal Christmas ornaments when you choose flat, fully dried specimens and arrange them on a suitable blank. The key is patience: thick blooms can hold moisture, pressing times vary, and dried petals are fragile. Here’s how to prepare the flowers and assemble a simple design—with a clear note on what is and isn’t established about glue and sealants.
Choose flowers that suit a flat design
Thin, naturally flat flowers and leaves are easiest to press and arrange as a botanical collage. Bulky, moisture-rich blooms take longer to dry and may retain enough moisture to encourage mold, so they are poor choices for a pressed layout.
If you want to preserve a fuller flower in its natural shape, drying it with silica gel is a separate option. University of Florida IFAS Extension describes silica gel as a fast-acting drying agent that can retain good color; for this use, it needs to remain dry in an airtight container. It is not necessary for pressing flat flowers.

How to press flowers for Christmas ornaments
- Lay out the specimens. Place each flower or leaf flat between sheets of absorbent paper. Keep pieces from overlapping: Mississippi State University Extension notes that overlap slows drying and can leave unwanted textures.
- Apply even weight. Put the paper inside a book or flower press and add weight if needed. Keep the stack in a warm, dry place. Natural History Museum botanist Fred Rumsey advises: “You want to ensure that you keep an even weight across the whole plant specimen that you’re pressing. Any part of the plant left in free air rather than in contact with the newspaper will shrivel up.”
- Wait until fully dry. Check the flowers rather than relying on a fixed deadline. The Natural History Museum says drying may take from a couple of days to a few weeks, depending on the plant and conditions. Mississippi State University Extension gives about four weeks for fully drying pressed plant material in its described method. These are estimates, not guarantees.
- Handle the specimens gently. Dried flowers can be brittle. Arrange the pieces before applying any adhesive to reduce handling once the design is in place.
The Natural History Museum says that drying flowers quickly can help preserve colour, but faster is not a reason to use excessive heat. Follow a suitable pressing method and make sure the material is fully dry before assembly.
Arrange the ornament design
A clear glass disc ornament is one possible surface for a pressed-flower composition, and individual craft projects show this format in use. Choose a blank that gives you enough room to position the flowers and decide whether your design will sit on an inner or outer surface. Those choices affect how you can access the arrangement while assembling it.

Lay out the dried flowers on the blank before gluing. Try different combinations of petals, leaves, and stems, keeping in mind that pressed pieces can break if moved roughly. A simple, open arrangement often makes each specimen easier to see.
Glue and sealant: what to know
There is no established, ornament-specific test here showing which glue will bond pressed flowers to a particular glass blank, or whether a protective topcoat will remain compatible and durable. Test your chosen combination on a spare surface or a nonvaluable specimen first, and follow the product’s instructions.

The Natural History Museum recommends PVA rather than sticky tape when mounting pressed specimens to card. That guidance is for card mounting; it does not establish that PVA is suitable for ornament glass. Likewise, the available sources do not establish long-term color stability or ornament durability after sealing.
Quick checklist before hanging
- The flowers are flat and fully dry, with no damp parts.
- Specimens were pressed without overlap and with even contact against absorbent paper.
- The arrangement was planned before applying adhesive.
- The glue and any coating were tested on a spare surface first.
