You can turn a favorite or customized video-game character into a physical figure, but a game asset usually needs editing before it is ready to print. The dependable route is to create or sculpt the character in a 3D application, make the mesh a closed printable solid, check its pose and supports in a slicer, then print it yourself or use a print service. Before sharing or selling the file or figure, check the game publisher’s rules: personal fan activity is not blanket permission to distribute or sell character models.
Can you export a game character and print it?
Sometimes, but access to a character in a game does not mean its files can be exported, edited, or used freely. Even when you have a model file, game-ready geometry may have separate parts, a rig for animation, or details stored in textures rather than in the mesh. A printer needs geometry that can be interpreted as a solid object, and details that exist only as color or texture will not automatically become raised or recessed physical features.

For a custom figure, it is often more practical to recreate or sculpt the character in a 3D application than to rely on extracting files from a game. Blender is one option, not a requirement. Roblox Creator Hub’s character template walkthrough shows one example of a Blender-based workflow that moves from a template and sculpting through texturing, preparation, and export. It is guidance for Roblox assets, not a universal 3D-printing recipe. Blender’s official license page says the official version can be used commercially; that does not grant rights to a game character or other third-party content.
How to prepare a character model for printing
- Choose the physical result. Decide whether you want a bust, a one-piece figure, or a multipart miniature. The choice determines which parts need to be modeled, joined, thickened, or separated. A texture-painted emblem, for example, may need to become raised mesh geometry if you want it to stand out by touch; alternatively, it can remain a surface color detail for a painted finish.
- Create or adapt the model. Start from a template or sculpt the character in a 3D application. Remove animation-only elements that are not part of the final object, and make sure small features such as fingers, hair strands, straps, or weapon tips have enough physical substance to survive printing at your intended size.
- Check that the mesh is printable. Inspect for holes and non-manifold geometry—edges or surfaces that do not define a clean, closed solid. Prusa’s modeling guidance explains why a manifold model is needed for slicing. Repair problems in your modeling or mesh-repair software, then confirm that the slicer recognizes the intended solid.
- Plan pose, scale, and parts. Choose a scale that fits the printer’s build area and preserves the details you care about. Thin limbs, weapons, capes, and long hair may need thicker geometry, a changed pose, or separate pieces. Splitting the figure can make supports easier to place or make a delicate part easier to print, but it adds alignment and assembly work.
- Orient the model and inspect supports. Load the model into the slicer for the intended printer. Check overhangs and unsupported sections, then adjust orientation and supports. Support contact can leave marks or rougher surfaces, so avoid placing supports on prominent facial features or other areas where cleanup would be difficult. With filament printing (FFF/FDM), orientation also affects how the part’s strength relates to the layers.
- Export and slice the file. STL stores a model as a triangle mesh and, in PrusaSlicer, imports as one object even when it contains several shells. 3MF supports multiple objects natively in PrusaSlicer. See Prusa’s file-format guide for those distinctions. Export the format your chosen slicer and workflow support, then inspect the sliced result rather than assuming a successful export means the model is ready.
- Print and finish the figure. Follow the printer, material, and resin or filament manufacturers’ instructions. Remove supports carefully, assemble multipart prints if needed, and apply any painted surface details that you did not model as geometry.
Resin or filament: which printing method suits a character?
Neither method is best for every character. The choice depends on the model’s scale and detail, printer capabilities, support strategy, material, and the handling and cleanup you are prepared to do.

Prusa’s resin-printer documentation discusses detailed resin output, while its resin safety and handling guidance covers relevant precautions. Use the instructions for the exact machine and material you choose; the general comparison above is not a substitute for them. You do not need to own a printer: a print service may be an option if its accepted files, materials, scale, and finishing meet your needs.

Do not assume that a model is yours to distribute just because you made it for personal use, created it from a game asset, or can access the asset file. Publisher rules differ, and permission for one kind of fan activity may not cover downloadable 3D files, physical merchandise, or commercial sales.

The policy prohibits selling fan art or merchandise that uses its content and describes limited exceptions, such as passive monetization of videos. Read the conditions rather than treating the personal-use statement as blanket permission.

- CD PROJEKT RED: Its fan-content guidelines, last updated December 10, 2020, set out that publisher’s own rules.
- Roberts Space Industries: Its Star Citizen FAQ says it does not grant permission to post, publish, upload, list, or offer its content for sale or download through 3D-modeling or print-on-demand sites.
These policies illustrate why you must check the current rules for the specific game and intended use. They are examples, not a complete survey or legal advice. A policy allowing personal fan content does not by itself establish permission to upload a printable file, take commissions, or sell a finished figure.
