Start with one plant feature people can recognize at a glance—spines, a bird-shaped bloom, shaggy texture, dramatic leaves or a pitcher plant’s trap—and make it the costume’s silhouette or main prop. For a quick build, turn a green shirt into a cactus; for a bigger statement, wear a cardboard snake plant, Monstera leaf or flower box.

Choose a plant feature that can carry the costume

A plant costume reads best when one distinctive shape or texture does most of the work. The Chicago Botanic Garden’s “Plants in Costume” offers several playful starting points:

  • Bird-of-paradise: Use the flower’s resemblance to a bird as the idea. A beak-like headpiece or bright orange-and-blue clothing can help people make the connection; those styling details are suggestions, not a tested build.
  • Chenille plant: Its hanging, fuzzy blooms suggest a 1920s flapper look with fringe or a feather-boa-like detail.
  • Pitcher plant: Its unusual trap and veined, colored leaves can inspire a spooky creature or “piece of meat” costume.
  • Old-man cactus: Emphasize its long, shaggy hairs to evoke Cousin Itt. The Garden notes that the hairs shade the cactus and help conserve water.
  • Croton: Treat its colorful, varied leaves as a cue for a bold, abstract, modern-art outfit.

These concepts need not reproduce a whole plant. A recognizable leaf shape, a fringe-like texture or a strong color contrast can be enough to make the inspiration clear.

DIY plant costumes, from simplest to most elaborate

The following builds are based on the materials and directions in In Bloom Florist’s “3 DIY Botanical-Themed Halloween Costumes”, posted October 8, 2020 and updated May 4, 2023. Choose the one that fits your time, materials and comfort needs.

Cactus shirt: a straightforward option for a child or group

Gather: a green child-size shirt, white pipe cleaners, a flower and headband, and a basket or nursery pot if you want the potted-plant look.

  1. Cut the pipe cleaners into short pieces and attach them to the shirt as cactus spines.
  2. Add a flower to a headband for a playful cactus bloom.
  3. For a pot, adapt a basket or nursery pot with a leg opening and shoulder straps.
  4. Have the child try on the container and adjust the straps so it sits securely and comfortably.

The shirt works on its own, so the wearable pot is optional. White pipe cleaners are the source-backed material for the spine detail.

  1. Cut long leaf silhouettes in varied heights from cardboard.
  2. Paint the leaves in alternating greens and add yellow edges.
  3. Glue the leaves around the inside rim of the pot or basket so they rise around the wearer.

Varying the leaf heights helps the plant shape read clearly. Before wearing it, check that the container and leaves leave enough room to see and move.

“Monster-a”: a Monstera face frame

Gather: cardboard, green paint, a green shirt and glue. Optional spooky details include fangs, fake blood or face paint.

Walking flower arrangement: a wearable flower box

Gather: a box, cellophane, flowers and greenery—real or silk—and straps. The florist’s tutorial also suggests floral water tubes or picks for fresh stems.

  1. Make leg openings in the box and attach shoulder straps so it can be worn.
  2. Cover or decorate it with cellophane.
  3. Attach flowers and greenery around the box.
  4. If using fresh stems, use floral water tubes or picks to help keep them from wilting.

Pick a build that suits the wearer and the occasion

Idea Visual cue Build considerations
Cactus shirt White spines and an optional flower A shirt-based build; adding a pot or basket means adapting it with leg room and straps.
Snake plant Tall, pointed cardboard leaves with yellow edges Requires cut and painted leaves attached to a wearable container.
Monstera A large leaf frame with holes and a face opening Requires a shaped cardboard prop; spooky details are optional.
Flower box A wearable arrangement of blooms and greenery Requires a prepared box and straps; fresh flowers need water tubes or picks to help prevent wilting.

The cactus shirt has fewer construction steps than a framed leaf or wearable flower box, making it a practical choice when you want a simpler build. That is a comparison of the described steps, not a measured time estimate.

  • For quick recognition: Choose a feature with a distinctive outline or texture, such as cactus spines, a Monstera leaf or shaggy cactus hairs.
  • For comfort: Any pot or box needs a leg opening and secure straps. Try it on and adjust before the event.
  • For reuse: Check your closet and recycling before buying materials. The Chicago Botanic Garden’s “Make Yourself Green This Halloween” recommends recycled materials and secondhand clothing as costume options.
  • For flowers: Use silk blooms for a reusable arrangement, or choose fresh stems and floral water tubes or picks to help keep them from wilting.

Make and wear the costume safely

The florist’s builds use scissors or a box cutter and a hot-glue gun. Take care when cutting cardboard and handling hot glue, especially when children are involved; the tutorial does not provide detailed safety directions. An adult should handle sharp tools and hot glue for a child’s costume. Check that face openings, leg openings and straps allow clear vision and comfortable movement before wearing a prop.

More garden-inspired directions

If you want to go beyond a single plant, the United States Botanic Garden’s September 16, 2025 article described October programs that invited visitors to dress as dangerous plants. Those October 2025 events are past, but the idea can still inspire a costume based on a carnivorous or otherwise dramatic plant.

Green Bay Botanical Garden’s “7 Garden-Inspired Halloween Costumes That’ll Impress Everyone”, published October 28, 2025, also includes pollinator-inspired costume ideas. Combining a plant costume with a bee or butterfly can work especially well for a group, provided each person’s main visual cue remains easy to recognize.
