The best tan paint is warm without turning yellow, light without looking white, and neutral without slipping into gray. These 11 options range from pale, airy neutrals to deeper golden and khaki shades. Because a color’s appearance changes with daylight and nearby finishes, treat the descriptions below as a shortlist—not a substitute for testing a sample in your room.
11 tan paint colors to consider
Benjamin Moore’s tan color collection describes tan as versatile and inviting, and notes that it complements natural wood. The brand highlights Ashen Tan, Chowning’s Tan, and Lenox Tan among its popular choices. The undertone and room-fit notes in the table are editorial guidance; check each shade against your own fixed finishes and lighting.
| Brand and color | Undertone and relative lightness | Best room or light condition | Finishes to compare | Sample verdict |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Benjamin Moore Ashen Tan 996 | Restrained neutral tan; relative lightness not stated on the cited tan-family page. | A good starting point when you want tan without a pronounced golden cast. | Natural wood, white trim, and gray or beige fabrics. | Sample if you want a balanced, understated tan; check that it does not read too muted beside your flooring. |
| Benjamin Moore Chowning’s Tan CW-195 | Richer tan; relative lightness not stated on the cited tan-family page. | Traditional rooms or spaces that benefit from a more grounded wall color. | Wood furniture, warm stone, and creamy trim. | Consider it when a pale neutral feels too insubstantial; test in the room’s dimmest area. |
| Benjamin Moore Lenox Tan HC-44 | Khaki-leaning tan; relative lightness not stated on the cited tan-family page. | Rooms with natural wood and other earthy finishes. | Wood species, stone, leather, and muted green textiles. | Worth sampling for a natural, earthy palette; check for a greenish or yellow cast beside existing materials. |
| Benjamin Moore Bridgewater Tan 1096 | Officially categorized as a neutral tan; relative lightness not stated here. | Spaces needing a conventional, adaptable tan starting point. | White trim, wood floors, and fabrics already in the room. | Compare its product-page coordinating colors with your finishes, then judge the sample on the wall. |
| Benjamin Moore Warm Tan 2162-30 | Deeper tan with rich golden undertones; relative lightness not stated on the manufacturer’s color page. | Rooms where a sunbaked, enveloping warmth is welcome; allow for adequate light or intentional contrast. | Warm wood, cream, brass, and other golden or earthy materials. | Choose only if the sample’s golden cast works with your fixed finishes; it is less suited to a no-yellow brief. |
| Benjamin Moore Manchester Tan HC-81 | Mid-value tan direction; an official LRV is not stated in the supplied product information. | When off-white looks too pale and the room needs more definition. | White trim, natural wood, and stone. | Sample beside trim and flooring to see whether its added depth remains neutral in your light. |
| Sherwin-Williams Canvas Tan | Light tan/khaki direction; LRV not stated here. | Airy neutral schemes, especially where a soft tan is preferred to a stark white. | White trim, light wood, and natural-fiber fabrics. | Test in both bright and shaded parts of the room; pale colors can shift noticeably with changing light. |
| Sherwin-Williams Accessible Beige SW 7036 | Warm beige-tan that bridges beige and greige; LRV not stated here. | Rooms where you want warmth but still want to coordinate with some cooler neutrals. | Wood, stone, warm whites, and greige furnishings. | Sample against nearby gray and beige materials to make sure it does not look too gray or too warm. |
| Sherwin-Williams Natural Linen SW 9109 | Soft, warm neutral; LRV not stated here. | Relaxed living spaces and bedrooms seeking a gentle neutral backdrop. | Natural wood, linen, cream, and muted earth tones. | A sensible sample for a soft, calm scheme; check it in evening light before deciding. |
| Sherwin-Williams Neutral Ground SW 7568 | Light warm neutral; LRV not stated here. | Brightening a space without defaulting to a crisp white. | White trim, light flooring, and warm or natural textiles. | Test beside the trim: in strong light, a light neutral may appear much paler than expected. |
| Sherwin-Williams Universal Khaki | Deeper brown-green neutral; LRV not stated here. | Rooms where a more enveloping, earthy tan is desired; stronger natural light or deliberate contrast can help. | Natural wood, cream, stone, and muted greens. | Sample carefully if you want a straightforward beige-tan; its khaki direction may show more green or brown than expected. |
How to choose a tan that stays warm but not yellow
Read the undertone beside fixed finishes
Look at the paint next to the flooring, upholstery, stone, trim, and metals that will remain in the room. A tan can appear yellow beside cool white, pink beside greenish stone, or gray beside warm wood. The comparison matters more than the color name: “tan,” “linen,” or “khaki” does not guarantee a particular undertone in your space.

Use lightness to balance the room
Light Reflectance Value (LRV) describes how much visible light a color reflects, and can help explain why a paint reads brighter or darker in a room. Sherwin-Williams recommends roughly 50–60 LRV for neutral shades intended to brighten without looking stark. That is general guidance, not a requirement that every tan on this list meets; no LRV is supplied here for the individual colors. See the brand’s neutral-paint guidance for its explanation of LRV and neutral colors.
Account for room orientation
North-facing rooms receive less direct natural light and can feel cooler. Sherwin-Williams advises considering warmer undertones and adequate LRV to counter that effect. In a dim room, a deeper tan may feel heavier; in a bright room, the same depth can feel balanced. Consider the room’s actual exposure rather than relying on a sample viewed under store lighting.

Choose the mood as well as the color
- Light tans tend to feel open and quiet, making them useful when you want a softer alternative to white.
- Medium tans add definition when an off-white feels too faint.
- Golden or khaki tans create a warmer, more enveloping mood, but their stronger undertones need to suit the room’s permanent finishes.
How to test a tan before painting the room
- Choose a few finalists. Include options with different depths or undertones rather than testing several shades that look nearly identical on a small card.
- Get physical samples. Use a sample pot or a large peel-and-stick swatch. Screen and print colors are approximations, and both manufacturers caution that perceived color can change with reproduction and lighting.
- Place samples on multiple walls. Check them in brighter and darker parts of the room, and alongside trim, floors, and any prominent stone or cabinetry.
- Observe them at different times. Look in morning, afternoon, and evening light; a tan’s apparent warmth and depth can shift through the day.
- Buy full-size paint only after the sample works. Judge the color with the room’s permanent finishes in place, not by its label or online image alone.
Benjamin Moore’s paint-color information and Sherwin-Williams’ color guidance are useful starting points, but neither a product page nor a screen preview can predict exactly how a shade will look on your walls.
