For a quick Halloween image, start in Gemini; for a photo-first edit, check Google Photos; and for a more controlled video project, try Google Flow. Google’s Halloween guide, published October 24, 2025, introduced ideas involving Nano Banana, Photos Remix, Mixboard, Veo and Gemini Canvas. Those ideas still work as creative prompts, but Google’s tools, menus and access can change, so the steps below distinguish the original instructions from current availability.
Which Google AI tool should you use?
These names refer to different parts of Google’s creative ecosystem, not a single set of interchangeable apps. Gemini is the conversational assistant; Nano Banana is Google’s image-generation and editing capability; Veo generates video; Google Photos is the photo app; Mixboard is an experimental visual-ideation tool; and Flow is a broader creative workspace.

Make a spooky portrait, pet image or invitation
Open Gemini on the web or in the mobile app. Start a conversation, upload a photo if you want to transform a particular person, pet or object, and describe both the change and what must remain recognizable. Then refine the result with short follow-up instructions instead of starting over.

A useful prompt spells out the subject, style, lighting, composition and intended use. For an invitation, ask for an empty area for text: image generators can render lettering incorrectly or invent details, so add the final date, address and wording separately in a design editor.
Ghost portrait
“Transform this portrait into a classic black-and-white Victorian ghost photograph. Preserve the person’s facial structure, pose, camera angle and framing. Add a subtle translucent effect, antique clothing, wet-plate texture, candlelit shadows and a dark Victorian interior. Keep it eerie, not graphic.”
Costumed pet
“Create three friendly Halloween costume concepts for this dog: a pumpkin, a tiny wizard and a vintage astronaut. Keep the dog’s face, markings, proportions and body shape recognizable. Show the ideas as a simple comparison sheet. Do not make the costume cover the dog’s eyes, nose or mouth.”
Invitation background
“Create a Halloween party invitation background with an elegant haunted-house theme, orange and black accents, moonlight, bats and pumpkins. Leave a large clean empty area for text. Do not add lettering or invent event details.”

Treat those examples as demonstrations, not a guarantee that every account will have identical controls or produce the same result. The original guide is at Google’s Halloween image and video tips.
Try a Halloween style in Google Photos
Google’s October 2025 instructions were: open Google Photos, go to Create → Remix, choose a photo, then select Halloween Remix. At that time, Google described Remix availability for Google Photos users on Android and iOS in the U.S.
Do not assume those labels or the seasonal preset are still present in 2026. Google Photos menus and feature rollouts can differ by platform, region and account, and a seasonal style may disappear. If Remix or Halloween Remix is missing, use Gemini to edit the photo or choose an available editing option in Photos. Before uploading a sensitive image to an AI tool, consider whether you are comfortable with the service’s applicable data practices.
Brainstorm a costume you can actually wear
Mixboard was presented as a Google Labs experiment for visual exploration. If it is available to you, use it to compare concepts; otherwise, Gemini can generate costume images from a prompt. Ask for multiple options and include a budget, comfort requirements and materials you can realistically obtain. A generated picture is inspiration, not a pattern or construction plan.

- Check that a costume allows clear vision, ventilation and free movement; look for hidden fasteners, unsafe masks, awkward footwear and trip hazards.
- For children, check visibility, ventilation, heat, fit and flame resistance, and supervise age-appropriate construction and wear.
- A picture of a pet in a costume does not show whether the animal will tolerate one. Never obstruct a pet’s breathing, movement or vision.
Make a short spooky video with Gemini or Flow
Google’s Halloween guide described using Veo to animate an image with a prompt or generate from text alone. In Gemini, open the video-creation option if it appears for your account, upload a starting image for image-to-video or describe a scene, then specify the action and look. Keep instructions focused: subject, movement, shot, lighting, sound and tone. Model names and access can change; the 2025 guide named Veo 3.1, which should not be taken as a promise of the same interface or access in 2026.

For example: “Create a short Halloween video, up to 8 seconds. Locked-off medium-wide shot of an old hallway with a framed oil painting. The painted figure slowly steps out of the frame, pauses, turns toward the camera and disappears when the lights flicker. Eerie but not graphic. Cool moonlight and one warm flickering light; no zoom and no cuts. Add quiet room tone, a soft creak and one distant thunderclap.”
Google Flow is the more deliberate option when you want to develop a sequence or keep iterating. Its current page describes text-to-video, frames-to-video, ingredients-to-video, video extension, video-to-video editing, SceneBuilder, characters and avatars, and image and video upscaling. Google lists Gemini Omni, Nano Banana and Veo 3.1 among its models. See Google Flow for its current tools and availability notes.

- Characters can change appearance between frames, while hands, faces, small props and text may deform.
- Generated audio may be inconsistent or tonally wrong; inspect the clip rather than assuming the sound matches the picture.
- A single clip is rarely a finished short film. For a more coherent sequence, plan separate establishing, action and ending shots, then assemble them in an editor.
- Google warns that Flow outputs may contain offensive or inaccurate material. Review the result before sharing it.
Turn an image into a pumpkin-carving stencil
Google’s 2025 guide suggested using Gemini Canvas to turn a selfie into a jack-o’-lantern design. Canvas availability may depend on account and rollout. You can also start with an image or simple concept in Gemini and ask for a printable, high-contrast stencil:
“Convert this image into a simple pumpkin-carving stencil. Use clear cut-out and intact areas, with optional shaded guide marks. Keep the major shapes connected with thick bridges, remove tiny details and isolated pieces, and make the design printable on letter-size paper.”
Before carving, print or trace the result and inspect it on paper. Thin bridges, floating islands and dense details can make a design difficult or unsafe to cut. Simplify it until the pieces are sturdy, and use carving tools with appropriate adult supervision.

Write an illustrated Halloween story
If Storybook is available in Gemini, a generated image can serve as a character reference. Specify the reader’s age, the tone, a clear beginning and ending, and which visual details must stay consistent. Proofread both the story and illustrations; generated text and images can contain errors.

What is free, and when might you need a subscription?
Google Flow’s page, checked August 18, 2026, listed a free tier with 50 daily credits and these paid options. Google says prices may vary by market and generation costs vary by model and media type; credit allowances do not mean unlimited generation.

Those figures are Flow listings, not a promise that Gemini image generation, Google Photos Remix, Mixboard or Canvas have the same limits or require the same plan. For one Halloween image or an occasional experiment, try Gemini or Flow’s free tier before paying. A subscription is more plausible if you expect frequent video work or independently value the other benefits bundled with a Google AI plan. Check Flow’s current page for the latest plan terms and regional availability.
Fix common problems
A feature or menu is missing
Confirm you are signed in to the intended Google account, then check the web and mobile versions separately. Google says Flow features can vary by subscription tier, platform and region, and Flow is for users aged 18 or older. Seasonal Photos styles and experimental tools may not be available. If a specific workflow is absent, use Gemini for a prompt-based image edit or Flow for a more involved video project.
The person or pet changes too much
Be explicit about what must stay fixed: “Preserve the subject’s identity, facial structure, coat markings, body proportions, pose and camera angle. Change only the clothing, lighting and background.” If the result still drifts, simplify the transformation and avoid changing several major visual elements at once.
The prompt is refused
Try an original, non-graphic concept and avoid requests for impersonation, sexualized depictions or graphic violence. For a protected character, describe an original archetype instead. A refusal or altered result can also depend on the service’s current policies.
Text in the image is wrong
Ask the image generator to leave a blank area and add the exact wording afterward in a design editor. Verify dates, addresses, prices and safety instructions yourself.
The video is inconsistent or too short
Separate the story into shorter shots and generate them individually, repeating the key descriptions of the character and setting. Expect continuity errors, then assemble the clips and adjust sound in an editor. The 2025 Halloween example’s duration should not be treated as a current guaranteed limit.
The result is for children
Specify the age range and ask for “spooky but not graphic,” with no blood, gore, weapons or jump scares and a reassuring ending. Review the result yourself; a prompt is not a substitute for adult judgment.
