For highly detailed 28–32 mm characters, a resin MSLA printer is usually the best fit: its fine pixels can reproduce small facial features, armor texture, and smooth surfaces better than typical FDM printing. Choose FDM instead for terrain, larger parts, and a simpler filament-based workflow without liquid-resin washing and curing.
How to choose a miniature printer
Resolution is only one part of the decision. Compare the printer’s pixel size and exposure control with the usable build-plate area, supported materials, setup features, and the work required after printing. A larger plate can accommodate more figures at once, but it does not guarantee a particular batch count: that depends on each model’s footprint, orientation, supports, and spacing.

- Detail: For small faces, fine equipment, and crisp surface texture, resin MSLA is the stronger starting point. Pixel size is useful for comparison, but it is not the whole story; optical uniformity and exposure also affect results.
- Capacity: Compare plate width and depth for batches, and Z height for taller models. More usable area helps when printing several figures or larger display pieces.
- Workflow: Automatic leveling and monitoring features can help with setup, but resin printing still involves support removal, washing, curing, and cleanup.
- Materials and cost: Check resin compatibility and profiles, and account for resin, wash-and-cure equipment, protective gear, release films, and failed prints—not only the printer.
Resin printers for detailed characters
Both of the resin options below use MSLA technology. Their manufacturer-listed specifications make the Mars 5 Ultra the compact choice and the HALOT-MAGE S 14K the larger-capacity choice. Maximum speed figures are manufacturer claims, not a guarantee of print time for every miniature or setting.

ELEGOO Mars 5 Ultra: compact detail-first pick
The Mars 5 Ultra is a sensible fit for a first resin setup when the priority is detailed characters and small batches rather than plate capacity. Its 18 μm XY specification, 9K screen, automatic leveling, and self-check features are useful on paper for someone who wants a compact, feature-rich machine. ELEGOO lists compatibility with standard, water-washable, ABS-like, and plant-based resins. Creality HALOT-MAGE S 14K: capacity-first pick
Choose the HALOT-MAGE S when build area and height matter more than a compact footprint. Its 223 × 126 mm plate is wider and deeper than the Mars 5 Ultra’s, giving more room for batches or larger miniatures; its 230 mm Z height also accommodates taller pieces. Creality lists 405 nm resin compatibility, a built-in air purifier, and professional-slicer compatibility. The purifier may help manage odor, but it does not replace ventilation or safe handling. When FDM makes more sense
FDM/FFF printers use filament rather than liquid resin. They are the practical alternative when the main projects are terrain, large parts, or pieces where avoiding resin cleanup matters more than fine surface detail. On small figures, expect visible layer lines and plan to tune supports and print settings carefully; a fine nozzle and small layer heights can help, but FDM is not the strongest choice for tiny facial details.
TechRadar’s 2025 guide reports a 220 × 220 × 250 mm build area and up to 250 mm/s for its cited FDM pick. Those figures describe that pick, not a universal FDM standard, and the available evidence does not establish one current FDM model as the definitive miniature printer. What resin printing adds to the job
A resin print needs finishing before it is ready for painting. Plan for support removal, washing, UV curing, and responsible handling of resin and contaminated waste. Set up in a clean, ventilated work area, follow the resin maker’s safety data, and wear suitable gloves and eye protection. Ventilation and protective equipment remain necessary even if a printer or accessory includes odor-control features. Creative Bloq’s guidance on resin printing
- Budget for: a wash-and-cure station, gloves, suitable washing solvent, funnels, and replacement release films, as well as resin.
- Control spills and waste: keep the work area organized and follow the resin manufacturer’s instructions for cleanup and disposal.
- Understand built-in features: Creality lists an integrated air purifier and a 405 nm wash-and-cure machine as ecosystem accessories. ELEGOO lists a drip tray, overheat protection, and compatibility with its Mars Mate air purifier. These can help with workflow or mess management, but do not remove the need for safe handling.
Which one should you choose?
- Choose the Mars 5 Ultra for detailed characters, a compact setup, and small print batches.
- Choose the HALOT-MAGE S 14K if you want a larger plate for batch printing or larger display miniatures.
- Choose FDM when terrain and large parts dominate, or you would rather handle filament than liquid resin, solvent washing, and UV curing.
Prices, stock, bundles, firmware, and regional availability can change, so confirm current details with a retailer and the manufacturer before buying. The cited sources do not provide a comparable cross-model failure-rate or total-ownership-cost statistic.
