Adobe Photoshop is not a permanently free Windows download. Adobe’s official desktop offer is a seven-day free trial, after which the selected Creative Cloud plan becomes paid unless you cancel it. The safest way to install it on Windows 11—or check whether your Windows 10 computer is supported—is through Adobe, not a third-party “full version free” installer.
Windows 7 is too old for current Photoshop releases. Do not download modified installers claiming to make modern Photoshop work on Windows 7: they are unsupported and can contain malware.

The trial includes the current Photoshop application and access to Photoshop on the web. Students and teachers can start the trial, but Photoshop is not free solely because of student status. Eligible students may instead receive a discount on a Creative Cloud plan.
Windows 11 compatibility
Adobe lists Creative Cloud desktop applications from 2023 onward as compatible with Windows 11. Adobe’s current Creative Cloud requirements say most 2026 desktop applications support Windows 11 versions 24H2 and 23H2. Install pending Windows updates before starting the download.
Use a current version of Microsoft Edge, Google Chrome, or Firefox when opening Adobe’s download page. Older browsers can cause sign-in and checkout problems.
What about Windows 10 and Windows 7?
Windows 10
Support depends on the Photoshop release and your Windows 10 build. Adobe’s current installer may require a newer supported operating system than an older Windows 10 installation provides. Before paying for a plan, open Adobe’s current Creative Cloud requirements page and compare the listed Windows version with Settings → System → About on your PC.

Windows 7
Windows 7 is not a supported platform for current Photoshop desktop releases. Adobe supports the latest operating-system version and the two previous major versions for desktop applications; Windows 7 falls well outside that support range. A download advertised as “Photoshop 2026 for Windows 7” is not an official current Adobe release.

How to download Photoshop officially on Windows 11
- Open Adobe’s official Photoshop free-trial page.
- Select Free Trial or Start free trial.
- Choose the appropriate category: For Individuals, For Students and Teachers, or For Teams and Businesses.
- Select a Photoshop plan and billing option. Read whether the plan is monthly or an annual plan billed monthly.
- Sign in with an Adobe ID, or create one with your email address.
- Enter the requested payment information and select Agree and subscribe.
- Select Get Started. The Creative Cloud desktop application will install and manage Photoshop.
- Wait for the installation to finish. Photoshop normally opens automatically; you can also launch it later from the Start menu or the Creative Cloud desktop app.
Adobe sometimes presents a shorter version of this flow: select Free Trial, sign in or create an Adobe ID, and download the trial. The exact screens can vary by region and plan, but the trial and automatic-conversion terms still apply.
Installing Photoshop from Creative Cloud
If Creative Cloud is already on the computer, you do not need to download a separate Photoshop installer:
- Open the Creative Cloud desktop app from Windows Search.
- Select Apps.
- Find Photoshop.
- Select Install.
For a first-time Creative Cloud installation, Adobe may instead direct you through Adobe Home → Apps → Photoshop → Download. The downloaded Creative Cloud desktop app then handles the Photoshop installation, updates, and sign-in.
How to stop the trial becoming a paid plan
The seven-day period does not necessarily start when Photoshop first opens. If Adobe collected payment details during sign-up, the trial begins when you select Start free trial after entering those details. If payment details were not required, Adobe says the trial begins when the application is launched for the first time.
To cancel a plan purchased directly from Adobe:
- Sign in to your Adobe account.
- Open Plans and payment.
- Select Manage plan.
- Select Cancel your plan.
- Select Continue to cancel.
- Choose a cancellation reason and select Continue.
- Select Confirm cancellation and save the confirmation email or screen.
Adobe’s Photoshop trial page describes a 14-day full-refund window after purchase for the applicable plan. Canceling during the seven-day trial prevents the normal trial-to-paid conversion. If the plan has already converted, the result depends on Adobe’s refund terms and the timing of the cancellation.
If you bought Photoshop through Apple, Google, or Microsoft, cancel it through that provider’s subscription settings rather than the normal Adobe account workflow. If Adobe is processing a payment or reports a payment problem, Adobe says cancellation may be unavailable temporarily; wait 24 hours and try again.

Common Photoshop download problems on Windows
Creative Cloud installation freezes
A first installation can take longer than expected. Poor Wi-Fi, antivirus software, software firewalls, corporate proxies, and damaged Creative Cloud files can all interrupt it. Try a stable connection, temporarily check whether security software is blocking Creative Cloud, and restart Windows before running the installer again.
“Unable to reach Adobe servers” or “Retry installation”
These messages can result from a proxy, a modified hosts file, outdated Windows components, a damaged user profile, or corrupt installation files. A new local administrator account can help identify whether the problem belongs to the Windows user profile. Adobe also provides the Creative Cloud Cleaner Tool for damaged installation data.
Check and reset a Windows proxy
Adobe specifically recommends checking WinHTTP proxy settings when network connectivity is suspected. Open Command Prompt as administrator and run:
netsh winhttp show proxyIf an unwanted detected proxy is listed, reset it with:
netsh winhttp reset proxyRestart Windows afterward. On a work or school computer, do not reset a managed proxy without checking with the administrator. Adobe identifies corporate proxy servers, software firewalls, antivirus tools, hidden proxy settings, and incorrectly configured hosts files as possible causes of download and activation failures. Corporate firewalls may need access to these Adobe servers over port 80:

Open Windows Search, type Credential Manager, and select Windows Credentials. In Generic Credentials, check for entries named Adobe App Info and Adobe User Info. Antivirus software can remove Adobe’s license credentials and trigger a sign-in loop.

Also check the Windows service that stores credentials:
- Press the Windows key and type Services.
- Press Enter.
- Find Credential Manager.
- Right-click it and select Restart.
Adobe also lists a stopped Windows Management Instrumentation service as a possible cause of recurring credential invalidation.

Adobe lists several possible causes: a changed system clock, trying the trial on another computer, an automated virus scan, insufficient user rights, a failed or damaged installation, a modified executable, or an attached debugger. Set Windows to update its time automatically, use the original Adobe installation, and avoid running altered executables.

- Cracked EXE files that disable Adobe sign-in or activation
- Old installers advertised as compatible with Windows 7
- Pages claiming that Photoshop Elements is the free version of Photoshop
- Installers that ask you to disable Windows security permanently
Photoshop Elements is a separate Adobe product, not a free edition of desktop Photoshop. A third-party installer can also modify the executable in a way that causes Adobe’s trial-expired or activation checks to fail.
Free alternatives if seven days is not enough
If you need a free desktop painting and image-editing tool rather than a Photoshop trial, consider an actively maintained alternative such as Krita, GIMP, or Photopea in a browser. These are separate products with different brush engines, file-format support, and workflows. They are not Adobe Photoshop downloads, but they may be sufficient for painting, compositing, and preparing reference images without starting a subscription.

Does the Photoshop trial require a credit card?
