Adobe Previewed Generative AI for Adding and Removing Objects in Premiere Pro—What’s Available Now?

Adobe’s 2024 Premiere Pro object-removal demo was a technology preview—not a universally available feature. Here’s what Adobe showed, what shipped, and how editors can handle similar work today.

Adobe did not launch a universally available object-removal tool in Premiere Pro in 2024. On April 15, 2024, it demonstrated Object Addition & Removal as a technology preview: a proposed workflow for selecting, tracking, removing, replacing, or adding objects in video. Current Premiere documentation instead covers AI Object Mask, Generative Extend, and a beta Generative Media Tool—useful related features, but not proof that the original object-editing preview is generally available.

What Adobe announced in 2024

Adobe’s April 2024 announcement presented three generative-video ideas for Premiere Pro:

  • Generative Extend: creates additional frames at the beginning or end of a clip.
  • Object Addition & Removal: selects and tracks an object, then proposes removing it, replacing it, or adding a new element.
  • Text to Video: generates new footage from a written prompt.

The object workflow was the headline-grabbing concept. Adobe showed examples involving unwanted production objects such as boom microphones and coffee cups, wardrobe changes, and added set dressing including paintings, flowers, or a vase. The company described these capabilities as a technology preview, not as a feature automatically included in every Premiere installation. See Adobe’s original announcement and press release.

Why editors were interested

Removing a small object from a still image can be straightforward. Removing one from moving footage is much harder: the editor must isolate it, follow its movement, reconstruct the background, match lighting and perspective, and maintain consistency from frame to frame.

An integrated Premiere workflow could reduce round trips to compositing software for relatively small fixes. It could help clean up production clutter, repair continuity, alter set dressing after a shoot, or create a quick visual variant without rebuilding the shot manually.

But the demonstration should not be interpreted as a guarantee that every operation works on every clip—or that the demonstrated interface became part of the stable Premiere release.

How the previewed workflow was supposed to work

The following is a conceptual reconstruction of Adobe’s demonstrated idea, not a verified current Premiere procedure:

  1. Select the object or area to modify.
  2. Track the selection through the shot.
  3. Choose an action such as remove, replace, or add.
  4. Describe the desired result or provide a visual reference.
  5. Generate a result and inspect it across the entire clip.
  6. Correct tracking, masks, prompts, or individual frames where necessary.
  7. Composite and render the approved version.

That distinction matters because a convincing result requires more than a mask. The system must generate new pixels where the original object was—and those pixels must remain temporally stable.

What Premiere offers now

Capability What it does How to describe its status
Object Addition & Removal Proposed generative removal, replacement, and addition of objects. 2024 technology preview; do not present it as generally available without separate current Adobe confirmation.
AI Object Mask Identifies, isolates, and tracks people or objects for masking. Current Premiere capability documented by Adobe.
Generative Extend Adds frames to the beginning or end of a clip. Current Premiere capability, with version and credit considerations.
Generative Media Tool Generates video and sound effects in the timeline from prompts, with reference and model options. Documented for Premiere beta.

AI Object Mask is not object removal

AI Object Mask can identify an object, isolate it, and track the mask as it moves. Adobe describes controls for adding or subtracting areas, using lasso or rectangular selections, and refining mask properties such as feathering and expansion.

That solves the selection and tracking stages. It does not automatically mean Premiere has generated a believable replacement for the pixels behind the object. If the mask covers a coffee cup, removal still requires reconstructing the desk, shadows, reflections, and background texture hidden by the cup.

Generative Extend solves a different problem

Generative Extend creates extra frames at a clip boundary. It can help with timing, transitions, reaction shots, or ambient sound and room tone. It does not remove a boom microphone from the middle of a shot or insert a new vase into an existing scene. Adobe documents Generative Extend in Premiere 25.2 and later, with usage and credit rules that can vary by format, frame rate, resolution, and plan.

Generative Media Tool is broader generation, not the same preview

Adobe’s Generative Media Tool documentation describes a timeline-based beta feature for creating video clips and sound effects from text prompts. It can use Adobe Firefly and selected partner models, and generated media is added as editable clips. The FAQ says these generations are processed in the cloud.

This is evidence of Adobe’s continuing generative-video development—not confirmation that the specific 2024 object-addition and object-removal demonstration shipped as a standard Premiere feature.

A practical workflow for similar work today

For masking and conventional compositing, Adobe’s current object-mask workflow can be approached as follows:

  1. Open the sequence and select the clip.
  2. Choose the Object Mask tool.
  3. Hover over or click the subject or object to create a mask.
  4. Add or subtract regions using the mask-editing controls.
  5. Track the mask through the shot.
  6. Refine feathering, expansion, and other mask properties.
  7. Use the resulting mask for compositing, color correction, blur, or another effect.

Do not assume this procedure removes the object. For actual cleanup, combine the mask with a clean plate, patch, clone, paint, or compositing operation. Difficult shots may be better handled in After Effects or dedicated visual-effects software.

Where generative object editing is likely to struggle

Any future inpainting workflow would need careful review when the shot contains:

  • Moving cameras or rapidly moving subjects.
  • Reflections, transparent objects, smoke, water, hair, or motion blur.
  • Faces, hands, text, logos, product labels, or fine repeated patterns.
  • Objects that reveal previously hidden background as they move.
  • Complex shadows, occlusion, lens distortion, or changing light.

Common artifacts include temporal flicker, swimming textures, incorrect perspective, lighting mismatches, tracking drift, and objects appearing in front of elements that should occlude them. A result that looks convincing on one paused frame can fail at normal playback speed.

For production work, duplicate the original clip, use non-destructive versions, divide long or complex shots into shorter sections, and inspect the result frame by frame. Keep a non-AI version for client review and document the model, prompt, Premiere version, date, and generation settings.

Alternatives for editors who need object removal now

After Effects

After Effects is the more natural Adobe companion for detailed tracking, rotoscoping, cleanup, and compositing. It offers greater control than a simple timeline edit, although it requires a more specialized workflow. Its availability does not prove that the 2024 Premiere preview shipped.

Photoshop for limited frame work

For a short shot or a small number of frames, an editor can export a frame, clean it in Photoshop, and composite the result back into the edit. This can be effective for static or nearly static shots, but it becomes labor-intensive when the camera or subject moves.

Conventional visual effects

Clean plates, motion tracking, rotoscoping, clone and patch work, paint, wire removal, and 2D or 3D compositing remain valuable. They are slower than a successful one-click generation, but they provide more predictable control for advertising, product demonstrations, legal evidence, and other high-stakes work.

External generative-video services

Specialist services may offer video inpainting or object-removal workflows. Before sending footage, check current masking and tracking controls, clip limits, export quality, commercial terms, privacy policy, model provenance, and credit or overage charges. Do not assume that a service’s still-image removal feature works equally well on video.

Credits, models, and cloud processing

Adobe’s current generative tools do not all use identical models or terms. Premiere beta documentation says users may select Adobe Firefly and supported partner models. Availability can differ between individual and business accounts, and credit consumption depends on the model and generation options.

Adobe positions its Firefly Video Model as commercially safe and trained on content Adobe has permission to use. That claim should not automatically be extended to every third-party model available through an Adobe product.

Adobe also says current Generative Media Tool processing occurs in the cloud. Professional users should confirm that cloud processing is allowed for confidential or regulated footage, and should check:

  • Which model produced the result.
  • Whether the project or client permits generative AI.
  • Whether model-specific commercial-use terms apply.
  • Whether Content Credentials or other provenance information is retained.
  • Whether the alteration must be disclosed to a client, broadcaster, platform, union, or audience.

Plan pricing and promotions change by region and date. Adobe’s pricing pages currently list Premiere standalone and Creative Cloud plans with different application access and generative-credit allowances. Verify the checkout page and account-specific terms rather than choosing a subscription solely because of the 2024 preview.

Verdict

Adobe’s 2024 demonstration showed a compelling direction: select an unwanted object, track it, and use generative AI to remove, replace, or add visual elements without leaving Premiere Pro. But the announcement was a technology preview, not proof of universal release.

Today, Premiere’s documented tools can speed up masking, extend clip boundaries, and generate new media in beta. They should not be conflated with the original object-inpainting demonstration. For reliable object removal, use AI Object Mask as one stage of a broader compositing workflow, move demanding shots to After Effects or dedicated VFX software, and verify Adobe’s latest release documentation before promising clients that the exact preview feature is available.
