In the current Windows 11 version of Microsoft Paint, open your image and select Background Removal on the toolbar. Paint automatically isolates the main subject and removes the surrounding background. Review the edges, then save the result as a PNG so transparent areas are preserved.
Older versions of Paint may not include this feature, and the exact controls can vary by Windows and Paint app version.

- Press the Windows key, search for Paint, and open Microsoft Paint.
- Select File > Open, or drag an image into the Paint window.
- With the image visible on the canvas, select Background Removal on the toolbar.
- Wait while Paint processes the image and isolates the subject.
- Inspect the outline, especially around hair, thin objects, and small details.
- Use Undo and try again if the result is unusable. If your installed version supports selection-based removal, select the subject area first for a more focused result.
- Select File > Save as > PNG picture.
Microsoft describes Background Removal as an AI-powered, one-click Paint feature that isolates a subject. The original rollout also described processing either the entire canvas or a selected area, but selection and refinement controls can vary between releases. How to save the cutout with a transparent background
Removing pixels is only half the job. You must also export the image in a format that supports transparency.

- PNG: Use this for logos, product cutouts, stickers, profile images, and graphics that need transparent areas.
- JPEG: Does not preserve transparency. It will normally replace transparent areas with a solid color, often white.
- BMP: Not the recommended general-purpose format for transparent cutouts.
Do not simply rename a file extension. Choose PNG through Paint’s save or export controls so the image is actually encoded as a PNG.
Current Paint versions also support Layers. If a Layers panel is available, check whether a solid background layer remains visible. Hide or remove that layer where appropriate before exporting. Microsoft says transparent canvas areas can appear as a checkerboard pattern and that Paint supports managing, merging, reordering, importing, and exporting layers. How to verify transparency
- Save a copy as PNG.
- Reopen the PNG in an editor that displays transparency, or place it over a colored background.
- Look for the checkerboard pattern or for the colored background showing through around the subject.
A white-looking area does not always prove that the background is still present: some viewers display transparent pixels against white. Conversely, a white layer may genuinely remain in the file. Testing the PNG over a contrasting color is the simplest check.
What if Background Removal is missing?
Microsoft presents the newer Paint features for Windows 11. They are not universal features of every historical Microsoft Paint release.
- Confirm that the computer is running Windows 11.
- Open the Microsoft Store, find Microsoft Paint, and install any available update.
- Install pending Windows updates.
- Close and reopen Paint, then open the image again through File > Open.
- Make sure the image is actually open on the canvas rather than only selected in a file browser.
- If the button still does not appear, use Microsoft Photos or Microsoft Designer instead.
The version number mentioned in Microsoft’s initial 2023 Insider rollout was 11.2306.30.0 or higher. That was a historical rollout threshold, not a guaranteed minimum requirement for every current Windows release, so updating through the Store and Windows Update is the safer instruction.

Do not confuse current Paint with Paint 3D. Paint 3D was a separate application described in many older tutorials and is not the default recommendation for the current Windows 11 workflow. Microsoft’s current Paint feature information is at microsoft.com/windows/paint.

The subject is partly erased
- Undo the result and run Background Removal again.
- Use a tighter selection first if your version provides selection-based processing.
- Start with a larger, sharper source image rather than a small compressed copy.
- Try Microsoft Photos, which provides brush-based mask controls.
- Use a dedicated editor when the edge must be corrected precisely.
In Photos, open the image, choose the editing controls, open Background, and use Add mask or Remove mask. Microsoft documents adjustable brush size and softness, along with Remove, Blur, and Replace background actions. See the Microsoft Photos editing guide.
The output still has a white background
Check these likely causes:
- A white background layer is still visible.
- The file was saved as JPEG rather than PNG.
- Your image viewer is showing transparency against white.
- The background was removed from the canvas, but the isolated subject was not exported as intended.
- The destination application flattened the transparent PNG onto white.
Inspect the Layers panel, hide or remove any solid background layer, save as PNG, and test the exported file over a colored background.
Several objects or people are in the image
Automatic removal may preserve multiple subjects or remove nearby objects. If your Paint version allows it, select the intended subject or region before running Background Removal. For reliable isolation of one object in a crowded scene, Photos or a more advanced editor is usually a better choice.
Which images work best?

These are practical expectations for automated subject segmentation, not performance guarantees from Microsoft. Paint is designed for a fast cutout, not professional-grade masking with guaranteed preservation of every strand, shadow, reflection, or translucent edge.

Paint versus Photos, Designer, and advanced editors

Microsoft Photos
Photos is the most useful built-in fallback when Paint’s selection is close but needs correction. Microsoft says its background separation occurs locally on the device and includes automatic selection plus Add mask and Remove mask brush controls. Start with the official Photos editing instructions.
Microsoft Designer
Designer is better when the cutout is part of a broader web or social graphic. Microsoft documents background removal and blurring as Designer quick actions. Use Designer or its official image-editing guide. Because Designer may use an online workflow, account requirements and feature availability can change by region and date; check the current service terms before using it for sensitive images.
Paint.NET and GIMP
Paint.NET offers more Windows raster-editing control while remaining simpler than a professional suite. GIMP provides advanced selections, paths, masks, and manual cleanup without the same minimal one-click workflow. Neither is a Microsoft product.
Photoshop and Adobe Express
Adobe Photoshop is appropriate when you need precise masks, paths, edge refinement, retouching, or non-destructive editing. Adobe Express is a browser-based option for quick design workflows. Pricing, trials, credits, and export limits can vary by geography and date, so check Adobe’s current pages rather than relying on a fixed price.
Privacy and online processing
Paint’s standard Background Removal description does not establish the same online-upload workflow used by many browser-based background removers. Microsoft specifically says Photos’ background separation is performed locally. Do not automatically apply that statement to every Paint or Designer feature: certain Copilot+ Paint features have separate sign-in and internet requirements, and Designer may involve an online service. For confidential images, confirm the processing terms of the exact tool and feature you use.

Try Paint first for a rough cutout, then use Photos’ Add mask and Remove mask brushes for moderate correction. Choose GIMP, Photoshop, or another advanced editor when fine hair or fur edges must be retained accurately.

Why does my transparent image look white?
The file may contain a visible white layer, may have been saved as JPEG, or may simply be displayed against white by the viewer. Save as PNG and test it over a colored background.
