Leaf-cutting art is made by cutting a design directly into a natural leaf. To try it, choose a leaf you can handle and secure, prepare it according to whether it is fresh or dry, sketch a simple pattern, and cut gradually with a fine-point craft knife on a stable support. The leaf’s color may change after it is detached; framing does not guarantee that it will keep its original color.
What leaf-cutting art is
In leaf-cutting art, the leaf itself is the material: the design is cut into its surface. That makes it different from a leaf print, a botanical drawing, or a paper cut-out. Artist Lorenzo M. Duran describes adapting paper-cutting techniques to the leaf, a thinner and more variable surface than paper. Duran’s FAQ traces his own idea to summer 2006, when he watched a caterpillar eat a leaf; he says he had made complex designs by 2008. That is his personal chronology, not a claim about the art form’s origin.

Artists’ processes vary. In an Associated Press report dated December 1, 2024, Japanese artist Lito is described sketching an outline on a leaf and cutting it with a design knife on a cutting board. Some of Lito’s especially intensive works on a single leaf can take more than eight hours, according to the report; that is an example, not a typical project time. Read the Associated Press report.
What you need to get started
- A natural leaf large enough to hold the design you have in mind.
- A fine-point craft or design knife for controlled cuts.
- A stable cutting board or other suitable support.
- A pencil or other light-touch way to sketch an outline, if you want a guide.
- For pressed-leaf work, pressing supplies such as absorbent paper or a plant press. These are optional ways to support preparation, not a required kit.
These are practical starter categories, not a tested universal tool list. The artist accounts document the use of a design knife, support, and pressing steps, but do not establish a best blade, brand, or leaf species. Work slowly and keep fingers clear of the blade’s path.

How to make a leaf cut-out
1. Choose a manageable leaf and design
Consider the leaf’s size, thickness, condition, and ability to lie flat and stay secured. No source here ranks species for fine cut-out work, so treat your first choice as an experiment rather than a guaranteed best leaf. A relatively simple design with open spaces is easier to plan than a pattern filled with tiny details.
2. Prepare the leaf
For leaves that are not fresh, Duran says he cleans them, dries them if needed, and presses them for several days. He then fixes the leaf to a support for cutting. Fresh leaves can be cut directly, according to his FAQ, without that initial cleaning, drying, and pressing sequence. These are documented approaches, not a controlled comparison showing which produces better results.

3. Sketch and secure the pattern
Sketch a guide on the leaf if useful, then make sure it is held securely on the cutting support before working. Lito’s reported method uses a sketched outline, a design knife, and a cutting board. The important practical point is that the delicate leaf should not shift while you cut.
4. Cut patiently
Work in small, deliberate cuts rather than trying to remove a large section at once. Intricate patterns demand patience: the AP’s report says some of Lito’s intensive single-leaf works can take more than eight hours, but your time will depend on the leaf and design. If the leaf bends, tears, or moves, stop and reassess how it is supported rather than forcing the cut.

5. Press and display
After cutting, Duran says he removes the leaf from its cutting support and presses it again. He may frame finished leaves or keep them in a herbarium. Display choices can protect and present the work, but they do not stop the biological changes that can alter a detached leaf’s color.
Will a cut leaf keep its color?
Do not count on it keeping its original color. Duran explains that after a leaf is separated from the plant, living cells no longer regenerate chlorophyll; the color generally shifts toward brown or yellow. He says that change occurs whether the leaf is framed or not. Proper treatment and framing may help preserve the artwork over time, in his assessment, but neither a guaranteed lifespan nor permanent color is established.

Preservation techniques are not interchangeable. The University of Florida IFAS guide describes decorative plant-preservation methods including glycerin treatment and skeletonization, and identifies heavy-textured leaves such as magnolia as suitable for skeletonization. That general guidance does not establish that skeletonized leaves are appropriate for fine cut-out art, or that any method preserves a leaf’s original color. - Fresh or pressed: Fresh leaves can be cut directly in Duran’s process; pressed leaves involve cleaning and preparation, followed by another pressing after cutting.
- Leaf and pattern: Match the amount of detail to the leaf’s size and how well it holds together. There is no established universal best species or thickness.
- Support: Choose a leaf and setup you can secure without shifting during cuts.
- Color expectations: If natural color change is unacceptable, leaf-cutting may not meet that expectation; the available sources do not establish a method that guarantees original color.
Artists to explore
Duran’s account is useful for understanding preparation and the limits of color retention. Lito offers another example of sketching and knife-cutting directly into leaves. Lito’s official site says he began producing leaf cut-outs in 2020 and that a private LITO LEAF ART MUSEUM FUKUSHIMA opened in 2024. It also lists books about his work, including titles romanized on the site as Itsumo kimi no soba ni iru: Chiisana chiisana yasashii sekai and Happa-kirie ikimono zukan. Visit Lito’s official site.
