To make a DIY scratch-off card, write or print a message on cardstock, cover it with clear packing tape or contact paper, then paint over the film with a mixture of acrylic craft paint and liquid dish soap. Let several thin coats dry, and the recipient can scratch the coating away with a coin to reveal the message.
What you need
- Cardstock or another sturdy card base
- A hidden message, prize, or design, written or printed on the card
- Clear packing tape or clear contact paper
- Acrylic craft paint, optionally metallic silver or gold
- Liquid dish soap
- A small brush
- A coin for scratching off the finished coating
For a sturdier card, use cardstock or heavier paper. The YMCA’s scratch-off art guide also suggests attaching plain printer paper to cardboard.

How to make a scratch-off card
- Prepare the reveal. Write or print the message on the card, keeping it within the area you plan to cover.
- Protect the message. Smooth clear packing tape or contact paper over the message. This transparent layer separates the writing from the paint.
- Mix the coating. Stir acrylic paint and liquid dish soap together. Published instructions use different ratios: 4OVER4’s guide gives two parts paint to one part soap, while tutorials from Bunny Den and Fun with Mama use equal parts. Treat either as a starting recipe rather than a guaranteed formula; the available instructions do not establish which ratio works best across paint types.
- Paint the covered area. Brush a thin coat over the film, covering the message area. Let it dry before adding another thin coat. The school activity handout calls for about three coats, while 4OVER4 recommends two. Follow the coverage you get, and allow each layer to dry.
- Let it dry, then scratch. Once the coating is fully dry, use a coin or fingernail to remove it and reveal the message.
Choose a method to suit the card
Paint directly over the film
This is the basic DIY approach: protect the message with clear tape or contact paper, then brush the paint-and-soap mixture over it. It uses common craft materials, but takes drying time and usually involves more than one coat. Metallic acrylic paint is an optional choice for a silver or gold finish, not a requirement.
Make a transferable painted panel
One tutorial describes painting the mixture onto tape laid on parchment paper, letting it dry, and then peeling up and transferring the painted tape over the message. This separates painting from the card, which may be useful if you prefer to prepare the coating before placing it over the reveal.

Use a scratch-off sticker
If you would rather skip mixing and painting, a pre-made scratch-off sticker can cover a handwritten or printed message. A sticker seller describes this option, but does not provide an independent comparison of finish, durability, or cost against the paint method.

- For a few handmade cards: The paint method is a practical choice if you already have acrylic paint, dish soap, and clear film, and can wait for the coats to dry.
- For less preparation: A scratch-off sticker avoids mixing paint and waiting for painted layers to dry.
- For a sturdier card: Start with cardstock or mount lighter paper on cardboard.
- For larger production: Custom scratch-ready printing is another option; 4OVER4 describes its commercial service, but the available instructions do not establish a general quantity at which ordering becomes preferable.
There are no controlled head-to-head results in the cited instructions for scratch quality or durability, so choose based on materials on hand, desired finish and size, and whether you are making a few cards or a larger batch.
