To needle felt a bird, shape wool roving on a foam, sponge, or brush mat by repeatedly poking it with a barbed felting needle. Start with a simple body, turn it as you work, then add the head, color patches, and features that make it read as a bird. Decide first whether you want a wearable brooch or a freestanding sculpture: the shape, assembly, and finishing parts differ.

Choose a bird project
A rounded bird silhouette is a forgiving first project. Use a reference image if you are aiming for a particular species, and simplify its most recognizable features into shapes you can make with wool: body, head, beak, wings, tail, and markings.

Gather wool and tools
- Wool roving: Use unspun wool roving rather than ordinary knitting yarn. Start with a main color and a few small amounts of colors for details.
- Felting needle: Use the gauge specified by your pattern. The Gathered brooch tutorial lists size 40 or 42 needles; Inspire – Culture, Learning, Libraries’ 2025 beginner-course page specifies a triangular size 36 needle. These are project-specific recommendations, not a single universal gauge.
- Work surface: Use a felting sponge, dense foam, or brush mat. The 2025 Inspire course gives an approximately 15 cm square and 5 cm thick piece of upholstery foam as an example, not a required size.
- Optional finishing parts: A brooch pin and thread are for a wearable design. A glass eye or other embellishments are design choices; add them only if the selected pattern calls for them.
For scale, the Gathered brooch project uses 15–20 g of its main merino roving color plus small pinches of additional colors. Those quantities belong to that small brooch design and are not a general allowance for sculptures or other birds. A needle holder may help if gripping a needle is difficult, as noted by the Inspire course.

How to needle felt the bird
- Set up the work area. Place the foam, sponge, or brush mat on a stable surface and work with the wool on the mat, not in your lap. Keep your free hand clear of the needle’s path.
- Prepare the body. Pull off a loose bundle of roving. For its brooch, Gathered’s tutorial forms a small loose ball and wraps it in a strip of roving. Treat that as one project’s method, not a required construction for every bird.
- Felt the body into shape. Poke the wool with short, controlled movements. The needle’s barbs catch and tangle the fibers, gradually compacting them; turn the piece often so it firms and shapes evenly. Gentle, frequent pokes are more useful than forcing the needle.
- Build the silhouette. Add or shape wool for the head, tail, or other body areas as your design requires. Some brooch instructions use loose fibers to join areas; a sculpture may use separately formed parts. Follow your pattern’s assembly order rather than assuming all birds are built the same way.
- Add color and identifying features. Layer small amounts of roving for wings, feather markings, a crest, or facial areas. A bird design may also need a beak and eyes. Keep adding and felting small amounts until the details sit within the shape rather than looking like loose tufts.
- Finish for the intended use. For a brooch, attach the pin with thread as directed by the project. For a sculpture, make and attach feet or other parts if its pattern includes them; Living Felt’s bird tutorial, for example, has separate beak and feet work in its preceding lesson.
Common beginner problems
- The form stays loose: Continue felting with controlled pokes, rotating the wool so the fibers compact across the shape instead of only on one side.
- The bird looks like an indistinct ball: Clarify the silhouette by shaping the head and tail, then add a small number of recognizable color or face details. A reference image can help you decide which features matter most.
- The needle is hard to control: Slow down, use short movements, and keep the project on its mat. A needle holder is an option for people who have difficulty with grip or dexterity.
- You are unsure how much wool or which needle to use: Use the quantities and gauge stated by your chosen project. Published examples vary with format and design, so neither one project’s wool amount nor its needle size is a universal rule.
