The Aufero Laser 1 can be an inexpensive way to engrave small wood and leather projects, but it is not a plug-and-play appliance or a general-purpose cutter. Its mostly pre-assembled frame and beginner-accessible software reduce the mechanical learning curve; you still need to configure the software, test each material, ventilate fumes, and supervise every job. In 2026, it also appears to be a legacy or remaining-stock purchase: check the exact laser module, seller, warranty, and return terms before buying.

What the Aufero Laser 1 is
The Aufero Laser 1 is a compact, USB-controlled, open-frame diode laser engraver designed for small hobby and craft projects. Its documented work area is 180 × 180 mm (about 7.1 × 7.1 inches), suitable for small labels, ornaments, leather patches, and personalization—not large signs or production batches. It is not a general-purpose laser cutter.

Official support documentation lists LU2-2, LU2-4, and LU2-10A modules with different optical outputs, so a listing that says only “Aufero Laser 1” does not establish the machine’s power. The original Phandroid article promoting it was published on October 21, 2021; its “easier” framing describes the product’s launch-era appeal, not a new 2026 release. Specifications depend on the module and revision
| Specification | Documented detail | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Working area | 180 × 180 mm (about 7.1 × 7.1 in) | Official Aufero Laser 1 support documentation gives this area for the documented configurations. |
| Optical output | About 2.1 W (LU2-2), 5.5 W (LU2-4), or 10 W (LU2-10A) | These are module-specific figures, not interchangeable specifications for every Aufero Laser 1. |
| Maximum listed speed | Up to 5,000 mm/min on the official support page; up to 10,000 mm/min in a Best Buy listing for a 2 W version | The listings may reflect a revision, firmware difference, or retailer discrepancy. Do not assume either figure applies to every unit. |
| Connection and control | USB connection to a computer | Confirm operating-system compatibility and that the software recognizes the machine. |
| Frame dimensions | Approximately 450 × 320 × 140 mm in official support documentation | Retailer dimensions may differ by revision or packaging. |
| Software | LaserGRBL and LightBurn support | LaserGRBL is a free, Windows-oriented option. LightBurn is paid and supports Windows, macOS, and Linux; do not assume a license is included. |
| Listed protections | Position, tilt, watchdog/program monitoring, and exposure-time protection | These functions do not replace an enclosure, ventilation, fire precautions, or supervision. |
Specifications are documented on the official Aufero Laser 1 support page. The competing speed claim appears in a Best Buy listing for a 2 W model. The optical output—not just a package name or a seller’s headline—matters when you compare versions.
Why it can feel easier for a beginner
Less frame assembly
The machine was marketed as pre-assembled, which can reduce construction and alignment work compared with a kit that arrives as a bare frame. “Pre-assembled” does not mean inspected or ready to operate: check that the frame is square, fasteners are secure, belts are seated, and the moving parts travel freely.
Accessible software choices
LaserGRBL gives Windows users a free starting point for basic raster engraving. LightBurn offers a paid, cross-platform workflow with more tools for vector designs, layers, and repeatable jobs. Either way, you must choose the correct device profile and settings; the software does not remove the need to learn power, speed, focus, and image processing. See the LaserGRBL site, LightBurn site, and Ortur’s software and machine support information.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFixed-focus design and support material
A fixed-focus module can simplify focusing compared with a system that requires a more involved manual procedure. The exact focus method still depends on the module; follow its instructions rather than copying a procedure for another Aufero or Ortur machine. Manuals, videos, and support material help with setup and maintenance, but they cannot make an open-frame laser risk-free. Aufero’s support center provides product guidance.
What it can engrave—and what that does not mean
Retail descriptions list materials including wood, plywood, some MDF, leather, bamboo, cardboard, dark or opaque acrylic, and coated metal. Results vary with the material’s composition, color, finish, flatness, and the installed module, so begin with a small test on the exact stock you plan to use. A laser that marks a material may not cut it cleanly or efficiently.

- Wood, bamboo, leather, and cardboard: plausible small-format engraving applications, but test first and watch closely for scorching or flame.
- Plywood and MDF: composition and adhesives vary. Use only material suitable for laser processing, with effective fume extraction and continuous supervision.
- Acrylic: retailer descriptions mention black acrylic, but that is not a claim that the machine can cut acrylic generally. Color and composition affect how a blue diode laser interacts with it.
- Coated or painted metal: a diode may remove a surface coating to leave a mark. That is different from engraving the underlying bare metal.
- Bare metal: do not buy this machine expecting reliable direct engraving of ordinary stainless steel, aluminum, jewelry metals, or reflective surfaces. Those tasks generally require a suitable coating or a different laser type and process.
The cited retailer’s material claims are listed on its Aufero Laser 1 product page; they should not be read as a guarantee of cutting performance or bare-metal engraving.
Cutting performance is not the same as engraving performance
Optical output is only one factor in cutting. Material composition and thickness, focus, speed, power, airflow, and number of passes all affect the result. The 2 W version is best understood as an engraver; the 5.5 W and 10 W modules offer more cutting potential, but the small bed and open frame still make the machine a poor choice for thick-stock or production cutting. No universal cut thickness is established for every module and material, so avoid relying on a thickness claim without settings tied to the exact material and configuration.
If your main goal is cutting thick plywood or acrylic, compare a machine designed for that work instead. A CO₂ laser is often a better fit for serious acrylic and thicker nonmetal cutting; professional bare-metal marking calls for an appropriate fiber or IR/MOPA system.
Safety is part of setup, not an optional extra
The Aufero Laser 1 has an open frame. A shield, goggles, or automatic protection features are not equivalent to a fully enclosed, interlocked machine with extraction. Use suitable laser eye protection, provide effective ventilation or fume extraction, keep a fire-safe workspace, and never leave an active job unattended. Stop the machine immediately if you see unexpected flame, excessive smoke, scorching, or movement.
Do not put PVC, vinyl, unknown plastics, chlorinated materials, or materials likely to release toxic or corrosive fumes under the laser. Avoid reflective bare metals unless the manufacturer and applicable laser-safety guidance specifically support that use. Do not process anything you cannot monitor safely. Aufero’s support center includes safety and handling guidance; a safe workspace and careful material selection remain the operator’s responsibility.

Setup: what a first session actually involves
- Inventory and inspect. Check the frame, module, power supply, USB cable, any supplied protective equipment, tools, and documentation. Inspect for shipping damage and confirm that the module and accessories match the seller’s description.
- Check the frame. Even a mostly pre-assembled unit needs inspection. Verify that it is square and stable, fasteners are tight, belts are seated, and the head moves freely without obvious looseness.
- Prepare the work area. Place it on a stable, nonflammable surface, clear nearby combustibles, and arrange ventilation or fume extraction before powering it on.
- Install control software. Choose LaserGRBL for a free, Windows-oriented start or paid LightBurn for cross-platform and more advanced work. Connect over USB and verify that the software can communicate with the machine.
- Configure the machine. Select the correct controller or device profile and confirm the work area and origin settings for your unit. Do not import settings from a different model without checking compatibility.
- Focus and position the material. Follow the focus procedure for the installed module. Secure light or small stock so it cannot shift. Use a framing or outline function only as supported by the software and machine, and use a safe positioning mode.
- Run a small material test. Make a test grid or strip, varying speed and power conservatively. Record results for the exact material, thickness, color, finish, and batch; a setting that worked on one piece may not suit another.
- Start with a simple engraving. Try small text or a simple black-and-white graphic. Stay at the machine throughout the job and be ready to stop it.
- Clean and inspect after use. Remove residue and check the lens or module and frame. Store the machine so it cannot be activated accidentally.
Aufero’s support center and Ortur’s product support page cover support, setup, and maintenance information. The process still calls for software configuration, material testing, and preparation of a safe workspace; it is not a zero-setup workflow.

Common problems and sensible recovery steps
Faint, uneven, or inconsistent marks
Check focus, material movement, warped stock, a dirty lens, frame alignment, belt tension, and the image-processing and speed/power settings. Clean the module as directed, secure the workpiece, inspect the frame, then run a fresh test grid on the actual material. Avoid generic online setting tables as a substitute for testing. Aufero’s support center includes maintenance guidance.
The machine stops mid-job
A stop may follow movement or tilt detection, a USB interruption, watchdog behavior, vibration, or a controller/software communication fault. Stop and power down, inspect the frame and cable, place the machine on a stable surface, reconnect USB, and confirm the correct profile and firmware. Do not disable a safety feature simply to avoid interruptions. The listed protections are described by Ortur and in this manual mirror.
Smoke, flame, or severe scorching
Stop the laser immediately, disconnect power if necessary, and extinguish the material safely. Do not resume until you have reassessed the material, settings, airflow, and workspace. Never leave a job unattended; consult the safety guidance at the Aufero support center.
The software will not connect
Check that the machine is powered on, the USB cable and port work, the correct serial port and device profile are selected, no other program is using the port, and the operating system permits the connection. Driver and firmware compatibility can depend on the computer and software version, so consult the applicable support documentation rather than assuming every connection fault has the same cause.

The material burns instead of marking cleanly
Test a lower power or higher speed, and consider several less aggressive passes rather than one slow, high-power pass. Use airflow where appropriate and repeat a test grid. Masking or surface preparation is only suitable when compatible with the material and safe for laser use.
How it compares with newer choices
Ortur’s current catalog emphasizes newer R1, R2, and Laser Master products rather than presenting the Aufero Laser 1 as a current flagship. The Aufero may cost less, but a newer machine can offer a clearer current product and support path. The following prices are dated signals, not guaranteed current offers.
| Option | Best reason to consider it | Price signal and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Aufero Laser 1 | Lowest-cost route for small-format engraving, if the exact module and seller terms check out. | US Target and Home Depot listings were around $151.05 and $159 respectively when checked on August 16, 2026; these are retailer listings, not a stated manufacturer-direct price. |
| Ortur R1 | A more current Ortur option for buyers who still value portability and beginner use. | Ortur’s collection showed a price from about $199 when checked; current offers may change. |
| Ortur Laser Master 3 | A larger, more capable current platform for users expecting to expand project size or capability. | Ortur’s product collection showed a price from about $499 when checked; configuration affects the comparison. |
| Creality Falcon 5 W | A newer product-page option with a protective cover, for buyers willing to spend more than on the Aufero listings. | Creality listed $349 when checked; the cover does not remove the need for laser-safety precautions. |
| xTool M2 or S1 | Consider these when enclosure, workflow, and support matter more than minimum purchase price. | xTool’s store showed the M2 from about $599 and the S1 from about $1,299 when checked; these are not budget-equivalent alternatives. |
The Aufero price observations come from US listings at Target and Home Depot, checked August 16, 2026. The current-product price signals are from the Ortur catalog, Ortur product collection, Creality Falcon page, and xTool store, as checked on that date. Availability and pricing can change.
Who should buy it in 2026?
It makes sense for a budget-conscious maker who wants to personalize small wood or leather items, is comfortable preparing a ventilated and supervised workspace, and can verify the exact module before ordering. For a painter or craft seller, that might mean small wooden labels, ornaments, or other flat accessories—not a replacement for a large-format sign-making workflow.
Skip it if you need a large work area, dependable fast cutting, direct bare-metal engraving, unattended indoor use, or a sealed appliance-like workflow. Its open frame and small bed are fundamental trade-offs, not issues solved by choosing the highest-output module.
Before purchasing remaining stock, confirm the optical output rather than relying on ambiguous “W” labeling, what accessories are actually included, who provides the warranty, the return window, and whether replacement parts and support are available. Ortur’s current catalog is useful context: it features newer products rather than positioning the Aufero Laser 1 as its current flagship. Treat any marketplace price as time-sensitive and seller-specific.
