The AllPeopleQuilt Baby Animal Quilt is a small Log Cabin quilt made with fussy-cut animal-print centers. The finished quilt measures 36-1/2 inches square, with nine 12-inch finished blocks arranged in three rows. It can be made as a gift or supervised textile, but it should not be placed in an infant’s crib, bassinet or play yard during sleep.

What is the Baby Animal Quilt pattern?
AllPeopleQuilt describes this project as a quick-to-sew Log Cabin quilt. Each block starts with an animal-print square cut to showcase a motif; fabric strips are then added around the center. The nine blocks are grouped by color and arranged in three rows. The project page, updated March 13, 2026, credits American Patchwork & Quilting Editors and quilt tester Martha Gamm. Its fabrics are identified as the Aussie Friends collection by Deane Beesley for P&B Textiles, and its design was inspired by Flip the Script by Tonya Alexander of Stash Lab Quilts. How the quilt is constructed
- Choose and cut the centers. Select an animal print whose motifs fit within the 2-1/2-inch squares. Cut nine squares, checking the placement of each motif before cutting.
- Build the Log Cabin blocks. Sew successive strips around each center, following the pattern’s cutting and sewing order. The pattern groups the blocks into three color combinations, with three blocks in each group.
- Arrange the top. Lay out all nine blocks in three rows and follow the pattern layout for the intended color balance.
- Layer and finish. Place the quilt top with the batting and backing, quilt as desired, then bind the edges.
Choosing fabric for the animal-print centers
The center squares are small, so motif scale and spacing matter more than the general label “animal print.” Look for enough clear space to cut nine squares that each show the intended motif. Check the print repeat against the required cuts before buying or cutting: widely spaced animals may require more fabric than the listed fat eighth, while tighter spacing may use less. For substitute fabrics, coordinate the six print groups and confirm that the usable width supports the stated yardages.

A baby quilt may be a handmade gift or a textile for supervised use, but it is not bedding for an infant’s sleep space. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission says “Bare is Best” and advises that a crib, bassinet or play yard contain nothing but a fitted sheet; it also says not to add blankets or pillows. Keep the quilt away from those spaces during sleep. Read the CPSC’s Safe Sleep guidance.
