String piecing joins fabric strips—often scraps—into larger units for quilt blocks or quilt tops. Choose consistent-width strips for a regular look, vary their widths for more visual movement, or mix in wonky and small pieces for an especially improvised result. You can sew onto a foundation or piece without one; the featured method in the American Patchwork & Quilting Editors’ tutorial, updated August 7, 2024, uses no foundation.

What string piecing is
String piecing, sometimes called improvisational piecing, is a way to join fabric strips, or “strings,” into a larger piece that can be used in a quilt block or quilt top. The strips can come from scraps, and they may be arranged randomly or grouped into graduated color families. They do not all need to be the same width.
The method is flexible: the choices below change the finished unit’s visual character. The American Patchwork & Quilting Editors describe it as “a very freeform and forgiving technique,” suitable for quilters of all skill levels. That is their general characterization; it does not mean every construction decision is foolproof.

Three ways to change the look
| Approach | Visual effect | How it uses strips and scraps |

| Consistent-width strips | More regular and orderly | Widths stay consistent; strip lengths can differ because the unit can be trimmed later. |
| Varied-width strips | More visual interest and whimsy | Mix widths as desired. Expect to need more strips to build a unit to the size you want. |
| Wonky or smaller pieces | More irregular and improvisational | Incorporate uneven or small scraps; these can also extend a unit that is too short. |
1. Keep strip widths consistent
Use strips of a shared width when you want the pieced surface to feel more regular. Their lengths can vary: the tutorial notes that you can trim the completed unit later, so the strips do not need to match in length.
2. Mix strip widths
Combining narrow and wide strips creates a less uniform arrangement. This option takes more strips to reach the size of unit you need than the consistent-width approach. The tutorial gives no measurements or formula, so plan by the size of your intended unit rather than relying on a fixed strip count.

3. Add wonky or smaller pieces
Use irregular scraps when you want a looser, more improvised look. Small pieces can also help lengthen an existing unit that does not yet reach the size you need.
Choose whether to use a foundation
A foundation is optional. Sewing strips onto a base can provide a different construction approach, but the tutorial’s demonstrated method pieces without one.

Foundation paper is not required for the no-foundation method, and the tutorial does not name a specific brand.

The source explains the three visual approaches and the foundation options, but it does not give seam-allowance guidance, a pressing sequence, cutting dimensions, or instructions for achieving a particular block size. Treat those details as dependent on the project you are making rather than assuming a single set of measurements applies to every string-pieced unit.
