The best Benjamin Moore light gray depends on the undertone you want and the light where it will be used. For a near-white look, start with Classic Gray OC-23; for a pale blue-gray, consider Silver Gray 2131-60; for a warmer neutral, look at Wind’s Breath 981; and for a cooler, more defined gray, compare Porringer Gray 2121-40. Sample your finalists in the actual room or outdoors before choosing a full paint product.
Four Benjamin Moore light grays to compare
These colors cover distinct points on the light-gray spectrum. Benjamin Moore lists each with a light reflectance value (LRV), which is useful for comparing the named colors, but it does not guarantee how a paint will look in a particular room or on a facade.

LRV values are listed on Benjamin Moore’s current color pages, accessed in 2026. Treat them as product data for comparing these colors—not as a prediction of how light or dark a finished project will appear.

How undertones and room light change the choice
“Light gray” includes cool, warm, and greige-leaning neutrals. Undertone is the color character that becomes noticeable beneath the gray, and surrounding colors and changing light can make it more or less apparent.
Benjamin Moore’s gray interior guidance says north-facing rooms tend to reveal more blue or green undertones; many homeowners choose a warmer gray in these rooms. South-facing light is typically stronger and warmer, making a broader range of grays usable. Consider the room’s direction, lighting, decor, and nearby colors together, then view samples in those conditions.

How to choose a gray for an exterior
Outdoor light differs from indoor light, and a facade can look different in direct sun than in shade. Benjamin Moore recommends sampling a few favorites and gives this method for viewing a color outdoors: apply the sample to a white foam board instead of the exterior surface. The brand also says its liquid samples are formulated for interior use only. See its gray exterior guidance.
The brand’s light-gray palette is categorized as Interior/Exterior, but that does not establish that every paint formulation or finish suits every substrate or exposure. Check the selected paint product’s label and current technical information for the surface and project.

A practical way to test your finalists
- Shortlist by character. Compare the four colors by undertone and apparent lightness, rather than choosing from a color name alone.
- View samples in context. For interiors, look at each finalist in the room and alongside its decor under the lighting conditions in which it will be seen.
- For outdoor viewing, use foam board. Apply the sample to white foam board rather than directly to the exterior surface, following Benjamin Moore’s guidance.
- Confirm the product for the job. Once you have chosen a color, check the specific paint product’s current label and technical information for the intended substrate, exposure, and finish.
Digital swatches can help narrow the choices, but Benjamin Moore warns on its Classic Gray color page that on-screen and printed representations may differ from actual paint colors. Use a physical sample to judge the color in place.
