For a quick summer decoration, make a sign with wooden cone cutouts; for a more hands-on activity, try string art; and for a practical project, drill a cone holder from a suitable board. Outdoor yard art is a separate choice: use a blank sold for that purpose rather than assuming an ordinary unfinished craft shape will withstand the weather.
Choose a project by how you’ll use it

“Unfinished wood” can simply mean a shaped plywood blank ready to decorate; it does not require cutting a cone from lumber. For example, one listed cutout is Baltic birch plywood, 1/4 inch thick, 12 inches tall, and about 5-13/16 inches wide. Another listing describes 1/8-inch birch plywood. These are different product examples, not interchangeable specifications, so check the dimensions and thickness of the actual blank you choose.

Make a summer sign with cone cutouts
This is the most straightforward option if you want a bright painted display without shaping the wood yourself. Bee Inspired with Carol’s project uses an 18-inch sign board and six wooden ice cream cone shapes. The tutorial’s supply list includes cardstock, summer scrapbook paper, white chalk paint, acrylic paints, wooden letters spelling “SUMMER,” modeling paste, glitter or faux sprinkles, Mod Podge, scissors, a sanding sponge, paintbrushes, and hot glue.
Plan the design before attaching the cones
- Paint the sign board and let the finish dry.
- Decorate the cone shapes with paper and paint. The tutorial author recommends cardstock of at least 65 lb to help prevent printed ink from bleeding; that is the author’s tip, not a guarantee for every paper or ink.
- Arrange the cones and letters on the board before attaching them, so you can adjust the spacing and composition.
- Use the tutorial’s directions for applying its modeling paste and decorative toppings, then attach the pieces with hot glue.
If you prefer to buy a single larger cone shape rather than six smaller ones, Woodpeckers Crafts lists a 12-inch Baltic birch plywood cutout, approximately 5-13/16 inches wide and 1/4 inch thick. The product listing suggests painting, staining, wood burning, or decoupage; check the current listing for availability and dimensions.

Try a string-art cone
For a project where the board itself is the base for the design, Westmount Public Library provides an instruction PDF titled “String Art Ice Cream Cone.” The PDF says painting or staining the board is optional. Consult its complete instructions for the pattern and construction details rather than treating the title alone as a complete set of steps.

A cone holder is functional rather than decorative, and it needs a suitable board and drilling. Paper & Stitch describes using scrap wood or a wooden serving tray or cutting board. Its materials include two table clamps, a drill, a 1/2-inch spade bit (or larger, depending on how low the cones should sit), and sandpaper.

- Decide how many cones the holder should fit and plan the spacing of the holes.
- Clamp the board securely before drilling.
- Drill the openings with a 1/2-inch spade bit or a larger bit if you want the cones to sit lower.
- Sand the inside edges if needed, then wipe away drilling debris.
The tutorial does not establish that every board or finish is safe for food contact. Choose materials and finishes with that intended use in mind rather than assuming a craft board is suitable.
Pick a blank for outdoor yard art
An ordinary unfinished craft blank is not automatically an outdoor sign. Ivy’s Wood Creations lists an ice cream cone yard-art sign in 12- or 18-inch sizes and offers a DIY paint-kit option. The seller says the sign uses 1/2-inch MDO plywood and exterior semi-gloss enamel. That description is specific to the seller’s listing; it does not establish a lifespan or an exposure rating for other blanks or finishes.

Match the wood and tools to the project
- For a sign: Choose a board and cone shapes that fit your display area, and gather the paper, paints, adhesive, and embellishments used in the design.
- For string art: Choose a board suited to the library PDF’s instructions; painting or staining is optional according to the PDF.
- For a holder: Use a board that can be clamped securely and a drill bit sized for the opening you want.
- For outdoor décor: Look for material and finish specifications intended for yard use instead of relying on the word “unfinished.”
The project sources offer examples, not controlled difficulty ratings or comparative durability tests. Choose based on the intended use, the blank’s size and thickness, and the tools and materials you already have.
