The Coffee Time Quilt Block is a traditionally pieced coffee cup that finishes at 6 inches square. To make it, cut the specified light tan and blue print pieces, assemble the handle and cup, add the saucer’s diagonal corner seams, then join the units. The measurements for the handle, cup, and saucer units include seam allowances, so check them before joining.
Materials and cutting list
The official American Patchwork & Quilting pattern calls for light tan print and blue print scraps. Use suitable leftovers if you have them; the pattern does not require a particular brand or new fabric.

You will also need a sewing machine or preferred piecing method, thread, a way to cut accurately, and a pencil to mark the diagonal lines on the tan squares. Maintain a consistent 1/4-inch seam allowance.

These targets are from the official Coffee Time Quilt Block instructions by American Patchwork & Quilting, published January 16, 2014. The unit measurements below include seam allowances; the finished block measurement does not.

How to make the Coffee Time Quilt Block
1. Piece the handle
- Join one tan rectangle measuring 1-1/8 × 1-3/4 inches to one blue rectangle of the same size along their long edges. Press toward the blue piece.
- Sew a blue rectangle of the same size to the top and bottom edges of the unit. Press toward the blue pieces.
- Add a tan rectangle measuring 1-1/4 × 1-3/4 inches to the top and bottom. Press toward the blue pieces.
The handle unit should measure 1-3/4 × 4-1/2 inches, including seam allowances. Check it before attaching it to the cup.
2. Assemble the cup
- Sew the handle unit to one long side of the blue rectangle measuring 4-1/4 × 4-1/2 inches. Press toward the blue rectangle.
- Add the tan rectangle measuring 1-1/2 × 4-1/2 inches to the opposite edge.
- Sew the tan rectangle measuring 1-1/2 × 6-1/2 inches to the top.
The completed cup unit should measure 6-1/2 × 5-1/2 inches, including seam allowances. Match edges without stretching the narrow handle unit.

3. Make the saucer
- On the wrong side of each tan 1-1/2-inch square, mark a diagonal line in pencil.
- Align a square with one end of the blue rectangle measuring 1-1/2 × 6-1/2 inches, following the corner placement in the official pattern.
- Sew on the marked line. Trim the seam allowance to 1/4 inch and press the tan triangle open.
- Repeat at the opposite end of the blue rectangle with the second square.
The saucer unit should measure 1-1/2 × 6-1/2 inches, including seam allowances. Check that the diagonal seams follow the marked lines and that both corners are constructed at opposite ends.

4. Join the units
Sew the saucer unit to the bottom of the cup unit with a consistent 1/4-inch seam allowance. Press the seam allowance toward the saucer. The completed block finishes at 6 inches square.

What can you make with the block?
The official pattern provides one 6-inch block, not a complete quilt plan. You can incorporate it into a larger design, such as a sampler or a coffee-themed wall hanging, but the pattern does not specify a layout, yardage for a larger project, or finishing plan.

What size is the finished Coffee Time Quilt Block?
It finishes at 6 inches square. The handle, cup, and saucer measurements are intermediate unit sizes that include seam allowances.

What fabric do I need for the Coffee Time block?
The pattern calls for light tan print and blue print scraps. Follow the cutting list above for the piece sizes and quantities.
Is the Coffee Time block foundation-paper pieced?
No. The official instructions assemble rectangles and squares, then use marked diagonal seams to make the saucer corners.

Does the pattern include a full quilt layout?
No. It is a block pattern for one finished 6-inch square block, not a complete quilt plan.
Bottom line
Cut the tan and blue pieces to the official inventory, piece the handle and cup, and make the saucer with marked diagonal seams trimmed to 1/4 inch. Check the unit measurements before joining them; the completed Coffee Time block finishes at 6 inches square.
