To make a hollow porcelain doll part, sculpt and refine a master, divide it into plaster sections that can release without catching on undercuts, then cast porcelain slip in the dry mold and drain the excess. The mold’s parting lines, alignment, cleanliness and fit with your specific slip matter as much as the sculpt itself.
Plan the mold around the sculpture
Start with a finished master of the doll part. Mark where the plaster sections should separate, considering both how each section will come off the master and how the fired clay casting will release. Rigid plaster cannot flex around trapped undercuts. Ears, a projecting nose, curls, and other delicate or recessed details can lock a section in place or be damaged during removal.

Choose seam locations where you can clean the casting later without harming facial detail. Plan the pouring opening and any vents before making the mold. A head may need several sections, as well as separate plugs for details such as ears. A documented Make: doll-head project uses a multi-part mold, ear plugs and registration points; these are choices in that maker’s design, not a universal mold pattern.
Make the plaster mold
Bed the master and build the first section
Secure the master in a stable clay bed or suitable mold box, with the planned parting line exposed. Seal the boundaries so wet plaster cannot leak into the next section’s space. Leave enough room for a sturdy mold section, and add registration features to help the sections return to the same position. The Make: project uses boards, clamps, clay bedding and marbles for registration; other materials can serve if they hold the master securely and align the sections.

- They are stain and odor resistant
Apply release and pour plaster
Choose a release agent compatible with the master and your plaster process, and apply an even coat without puddles. The Make: maker reports using green soap on that project; it is not a universal recommendation for every master or mold. Pour plaster carefully to fill fine detail, then let the section set before turning the assembly and forming subsequent sections. Follow the plaster manufacturer’s directions for mixing and handling.
Separate, finish and clean the sections
Separate the set sections carefully and remove the master. Finish the pouring opening and add any needed vents. Wash away release residue and let the mold dry before casting. Oil left on plaster can impair slip casting, so do not assume a mold is ready just because it has been separated. Keep plaster chips and mold-making clay out of reclaim clay: plaster inclusions can cause defects in fired work.

Cast hollow porcelain parts
Plaster works for slip casting because its pores draw water out of the liquid clay. The Musée national Adrien Dubouché explains: “Through capillary action, the water contained in the paste penetrates the plaster, causing the edges to harden gradually.” As a clay layer builds against the mold, the interior remains liquid; drain the excess slip when the shell reaches the thickness you want.
- Close and secure the dry mold. Align its registration features and make sure the sections are held together.
- Pour in the intended porcelain casting slip. Use slip suited to your mold and firing process.
- Let the shell form, then drain. The right casting time depends on the slip, mold condition and desired wall thickness; the cited sources do not establish a universal time.
- Wait until the casting is firm enough to release. Open the sections carefully, then clean seams and openings while the clay is still workable.
- Dry and fire the part. Follow the slip manufacturer’s instructions and a kiln schedule tested for your materials and equipment.
The doll-making sequence—pour, drain, allow the shell to set, remove and clean—is also described by a porcelain doll-making process guide. Neither that account nor the institutional casting explanation supplies a universal drain time or firing schedule.

Size the master for your porcelain body
The fired doll part will generally be smaller than the master because porcelain shrinks as it dries and fires. Measure shrinkage for the body and process you intend to use rather than treating a published figure as a constant.
| Source and context | Reported figure | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Make:, 2017, for the porcelain and doll scale in its example project | About 10% firing shrinkage | A project-specific estimate, not a general porcelain value. |
| Bernardaud’s industrial manufacturing description; the page does not state a publication year | Model made 14% larger than the intended finished piece; 10–12% shrinkage compared with the model during the second firing | Manufacturer figures for its industrial process, not a substitute for testing a studio porcelain body. |
For your own work, make and measure a test piece or proof cast with the intended slip and firing schedule. Use the measured result to adjust the master dimensions; a shrinkage estimate is useful only when its material and process match your own.

Keep plaster work clean and control dust
Loose plaster and ceramic powders should not be inhaled. The Ceramic Arts Foundation lesson advises avoiding powder inhalation and wearing safety glasses while mixing plaster. NIOSH identifies crystalline silica as a pottery-manufacturing exposure hazard and describes enclosed handling and damp cleaning as exposure-reduction measures in industrial settings. A CeramicsWeb slip-casting handout also advises dust-mask use and suitable ventilation when handling talc or silica dust as mold-dusting agents.
