Make an ice lantern by freezing water between two nested containers: the larger one forms the outer wall, and the smaller one leaves an opening for a candle or suitable outdoor LED. Add evergreen sprigs or berries if you like, then place the finished lantern on a stable outdoor surface. A freezer works; naturally cold outdoor conditions can also freeze the water when temperatures stay below freezing.

Choose a lantern style and light

Choice Best for Trade-off
Nested containers A lantern with a flat base, an open center, and optional foliage in its ice wall Requires two containers, weights to hold the inner one in place, and may benefit from staged freezing.
Balloon globe A hollow, spherical lantern Requires partial freezing, checking for a liquid center, and draining that water before freezing the shell solid.
Candle A traditional visible flame Requires supervision and distance from flammable materials and children.
Waterproof outdoor LED Light without an open flame Use only a light specifically rated for water or outdoor use; an ordinary battery light is not necessarily waterproof.

For most first attempts, the nested-container method is the more straightforward choice. A dedicated reusable ice lantern mold can help produce repeatable shapes, but household bowls and cups work too.

Make a nested-container ice lantern

Gather materials

  • A large plastic bowl, tub, or bucket and a smaller plastic cup or container that fits inside it.
  • Water, leaving room at the top for expansion as it freezes.
  • Stones or other weights to keep the smaller container centered and prevent it from floating.
  • Optional evergreen sprigs, berries, leaves, or citrus pieces.
  • A tea light or an outdoor LED explicitly rated for water or outdoor use.
  • A freezer with enough space, or outdoor temperatures cold enough to freeze the water.

Build and freeze the lantern

  1. Freeze a base. Pour a shallow layer of water into the large container and freeze it until solid. The Canadian Wildlife Federation recommends a base of about 1 cm for a small lantern or up to 3 cm for a larger one. A solid base helps keep the inner container in position.
  2. Position the inner container. Set the smaller container in the center of the frozen base. Add stones or another weight so it stays centered and does not rest on the bottom.
  3. Fill the wall space. Pour water into the gap between the containers, stopping short of the rim to leave expansion room. Add greenery or berries if desired. Check that decorations will not block the opening or cause the light to sit at an angle.
  4. Freeze until solid. Timing depends on the container size and freezing conditions. Lee Valley’s mold instructions give 12–24 hours depending on freezer settings; HGTV’s container tutorial says several hours or overnight. These are method-specific examples, not a universal timer: check that the ice wall has frozen through.
  5. Release the ice carefully. Pour a little warm water into the inner container to loosen it, then run warm water around the outside of the large container. Ease both containers away rather than forcing the ice.
  6. Set out the lantern. Move it promptly to a stable outdoor surface and place a light that fits in the opening. If using a candle, keep the flame away from combustible material and children, and never leave it unattended.

Try a hollow balloon globe

For a spherical shape, Alaskan Ice Melters describes filling a balloon with water and freezing it for 4–5 hours, until a hard shell forms while the center remains liquid. Check that liquid is still inside; then pop the balloon over a sink or outdoors and drain the water. Freeze the hollow shell for another two hours. Those times apply to this balloon method, not to nested-container lanterns. The tutorial lists water-resistant LED lights or tealight candles; follow the light’s own rating and use candle safety precautions.

Fix common ice-lantern problems

  • The inner cup floats or shifts: Add stones or another weight and check that it remains centered as the water freezes.
  • The base breaks: Freeze the base completely before adding the weighted inner container.
  • Decorations drift into the opening: Freeze the shallow base first, then position the decorations as you fill the wall. Reposition any pieces that obstruct the center before the water freezes solid.
  • The ice sticks to a container: Use warm water gradually around the inner or outer vessel to loosen it. Do not pull hard on the ice.
  • The lantern sits unevenly: Water can expand unevenly as it freezes. Lee Valley suggests leveling a lantern on glass pebbles or river stones.
  • The lantern melts: It needs below-freezing outdoor conditions to remain frozen. How long it lasts depends on the temperature and lantern size; no guaranteed display duration is established.

Use the light safely

Choose a light that fits securely and sits level in the opening. For an LED, check the product’s stated water or outdoor rating rather than assuming a battery-powered light can get wet. For a candle, keep the flame away from flammable materials, place the lantern out of children’s reach, and never leave it unattended. Set the lantern on a stable surface where it will not be knocked over.
