To make a turnip-o’-lantern, cut a lid from a firm turnip, hollow it with a sturdy spoon or small chisel, carve a simple face, then place a tealight inside. Turnips are much harder to carve than pumpkins, so keep the root steady on a chopping board and have an adult handle the knife when children are helping.
What you’ll need
- A firm, roughly head-sized turnip.
- A stable chopping board that keeps the turnip from rolling.
- A sharp kitchen knife for cutting the lid and face. An adult should handle it, especially during a children’s activity.
- A sturdy spoon or small chisel for hollowing the center.
- A tealight for a candle-lit lantern, or an LED tealight as a modern flame-free display option.
How to carve a turnip lantern
- Stabilize the turnip. Set it on a chopping board and choose an orientation in which it will not roll as you cut.
- Cut off a lid. With a sharp knife, carefully remove a disc from the top or bottom. Cutting from the top gives you a lid you can lift off and replace.
- Hollow the center. Mark a border inside the skin, then scoop or chip out the flesh with a sturdy spoon or small chisel. The National Trust for Scotland suggests a border of about 3 cm from the skin; a separate instructional guide advises leaving a rim of at least 1 cm. These are different sources’ recommendations, not a single required measurement. Leave enough wall to keep the turnip’s shape.
- Cut a simple face. Use the knife to make triangular eyes and a nose. Simple shapes are easier to cut through the firm root than elaborate details.
- Add the light and replace the lid. Put a tealight inside and set the lid back in place. An LED tealight is an optional modern alternative if you want a flame-free display.
Safety and carving difficulty
A turnip is a tough root vegetable: the National Trust for Scotland notes that carving one takes strong arms and a sharp knife, and calls pumpkins considerably easier to carve. Work slowly, keep the turnip stable, and keep hands out of the blade’s path. For a children’s activity, the Young Archaeologists’ Club says an adult should use the knife and craft knife; children can help with non-cutting parts under supervision.

If using a candle or tealight, supervise it and keep the lantern away from flammable materials. The heritage sources document candle-lit lanterns but do not assess the safety performance of specific lights or holders.
Turnips, neeps and Halloween lanterns
In Scotland, a turnip lantern is also called a neep lantern. The National Trust for Scotland describes it as a Halloween custom and notes that root crops such as turnips grow well in Scotland’s cool, damp climate.

The National Museum of Ireland holds a plaster-cast model of a Donegal “ghost turnip.” The museum received it in 1943 from a schoolteacher near Fintown, who said this type of lantern was made locally around 1900. Its collection record describes candles being placed inside turnips at Halloween to frighten people on 31 October.
Galway City Museum describes hollowed turnip lanterns as once widespread across Ireland and Britain. It says emigrants carried the custom to North America, where pumpkins became the lantern of choice because they were more plentiful and easier to carve. A turnip makes sense if you want to try the older neep or turnip tradition and can find a suitable root; a pumpkin is the easier carving option.
