“Double Cross Quilt” refers to several different patterns, not one standard design. If you want a block tutorial, a large bed quilt, a small wall hanging, or a modern variation, check the designer and finished dimensions before you start or buy a pattern.
Which Double Cross quilt pattern do you mean?
Four distinct projects use this name or a closely related block name. Their construction, scale, and fabric requirements differ.

Choose by the project you want to make, not by the shared title. A matching name alone does not establish that these designs share a construction or history.
How do you make the Scissortail Double Cross block?
Scissortail Quilting rates its block advanced beginner. Its tutorial explains that dividing the block vertically and horizontally reveals a construction from four square-in-a-square units. The page provides a downloadable pattern and cutting charts for several finished block sizes; use the chart for the size you select rather than estimating cuts by scaling another size.

For example, the 10-inch chart calls for four A pieces, eight B pieces, four C pieces, and four D pieces. The PDF gives the corresponding cut dimensions. What fabric and tools does Angela Pingel’s quilt use?
Angela Pingel’s beginner full-quilt pattern calls for 40 fat quarters and specifies a rotary cutter and ruler for traditional piecing. The listed finished size is 72 × 96 inches. These requirements apply to Pingel’s version, not to every pattern called Double Cross. The retailer identifies the pattern as printed paper, item APDC116; its stock information is inconsistent, so check the seller’s current listing before ordering: Angela Pingel Double Cross pattern listing.

A rotary cutter is a practical tool for that pattern because its listing expressly calls for one, but no particular cutter has been tested or endorsed here. If you already have a suitable ruler and cutter, the pattern description does not establish a need to replace them.
How do the wall quilt and Indelible differ?
AllPeopleQuilt’s 44-inch wall quilt
AllPeopleQuilt’s project combines prints and solids and sets two different cross blocks on point. It finishes at 44 inches square and has its own fabric requirements, cutting instructions, and assembly steps. Use that project’s instructions rather than the Scissortail block chart: AllPeopleQuilt’s Double Cross wall quilt.

Anna Maria Parry’s Indelible
Parry describes Indelible as a slightly expanded version of the classic Double Cross block. The pattern is listed at 60 × 60 inches. Parry also notes that she encountered the block under the name Arbor Window in other sources; that naming connection does not make the patterns interchangeable: Anna Maria Parry’s Indelible pattern.

No single origin is established by the available accounts. A secondary quilting-history post reports a Kansas City Star pattern titled “The Double Cross Quilt,” dated September 7, 1938, and says Lori Holt renamed a vintage pattern Spool and Bobbins. The author also cautions that the historical pattern found was not the same block being investigated. Treat this as attributed reporting, not proof that today’s same-name patterns descend from one design: the secondary history account.
