The Simple Sue Quilt Block is a geometric pieced block that finishes at 7-1/2 inches square. The American Patchwork & Quilting Editors’ 2014 pattern uses navy, beige, and light blue print scraps, assembled into triangle-squares, corner units, and three rows. It is not the Sunbonnet Sue appliqué figure.
Fabric and cutting list for one block
Use quilting cotton scraps in navy print, beige print, and light blue print. Cut the pieces as follows; the square sizes given are before sewing.

| Fabric | Cutting |
|---|---|
| Navy print | Four 2-3/8-inch squares; cut each square diagonally once to make eight triangles. |
| Beige print | Four 2-by-3-1/2-inch rectangles; four 2-3/8-inch squares, each cut diagonally once to make eight triangles; and four 2-inch squares. |
| Light blue print | Five 2-inch squares. |
These quantities and dimensions are for the single block specified in the American Patchwork & Quilting Simple Sue pattern.
Piece and assemble the block
Make eight triangle-squares
- Pair one beige triangle with one navy triangle, right sides together.
- Sew the pair together to make a triangle-square. Press the seam toward the navy fabric.
- Repeat with the remaining triangles. Each finished triangle-square should measure 2 inches including seam allowances.
Make four corner units
- For each unit, arrange one beige 2-inch square, one light blue 2-inch square, and two triangle-squares as shown in the pattern’s block layout.
- Sew the pieces together to form the corner unit.
- Check that each unit measures 3-1/2 inches square, including seam allowances.
Join the rows
- Lay out the four corner units and the remaining pieces in three horizontal rows, following the pattern layout.
- Sew the pieces in each row together, keeping their edges aligned.
- Join the three rows to complete the block.
Tools and accurate cutting
The pattern’s listed materials are fabric scraps; it does not require a particular cutting tool. A quilting ruler and rotary cutter are optional aids for measuring and cutting accurately. The Museum of American Heritage notes these tools’ role in precise cutting in its general exhibit on measurement: Measure for Measure: Putting Numbers to the World Around Us.

Simple Sue and Sunbonnet Sue are different quilt subjects
The Simple Sue pattern is pieced from triangles, squares, and rectangles. Sunbonnet Sue refers to an appliqué figure; quiltmaker Anita Shackelford’s account describes family quilts featuring that figure, with appliqué blocks and handwork. The sources distinguish these subjects but do not establish the origin or broader history of the Simple Sue block. See Shackelford’s account of her family’s quilts.
