To paint with smoke, use a moving candle flame to deposit soot on a support, then shape the marks into an image. The soot—not smoke itself—is what leaves the visible drawing. This process is called fumage, and its unpredictable marks can stand alone or become the start of a mixed-media work.

What is fumage?
Fumage is a way of making images from smoke or soot deposited on a surface. The marks form partly by chance, so the artist responds to what appears, then may soften, extend, or develop the shapes. The technique is associated with surrealist artist Wolfgang Paalen: the Belvedere describes him using candle smoke on blank canvases, wood, or paper and continuing the resulting motifs partly with oil paint. What you need
- A candle and a stable candle holder.
- A practice surface and a support for your finished image. One tutorial suggests heavy paper, canvas, or illustration board; for illustration board, it recommends applying gesso and letting it dry fully. These are starting options, not a guarantee that every surface will behave the same way. Art Is Fun
- A brush, or clean fingers, for gently manipulating deposited soot.
- Optionally, a charcoal fixative spray for a finished image. It is not required to make fumage.
- A stable, flame-resistant work area with nearby flammable materials cleared away. The tutorial lists a fire extinguisher, bowl of water, and damp cloth among its materials; these do not replace a controlled setup or careful supervision.
How to make a candle-soot image
- Prepare the workspace. Set the candle securely in its holder on a stable, flame-resistant surface. Clear flammable materials from the work area and have your practice support ready. Keep the flame and the support under continuous observation.
- Prepare the support. Choose a practice surface before working on a final piece. If you use illustration board, apply gesso and let it dry fully, as the tutorial suggests. Surface materials vary, so test rather than assume a particular result.
- Move the candle beneath the support. Light it, then move the candle below or near the underside of the support so soot deposits on the surface. Keep the candle moving instead of holding the flame in one spot. The tutorial advises experimenting with direction, speed, tilt, and distance: it reports that closer movement creates darker deposits and farther movement lighter ones, but gives no universal distance or controlled measurement.
- Read and shape the marks. Once you have a pattern, use a brush or your fingers carefully to draw out forms or soften edges. Work with the marks that appear rather than expecting a fully controlled outline from the flame.
- Decide whether to leave or develop the image. You can keep the soot pattern as a smoke study, or add paint, charcoal, or pastel. Paalen’s documented work is one historical example of extending fumage with oil paint.
- Finish only after the flame is out. If you choose to use fixative, extinguish the candle and put the aerosol away from every flame before spraying. Test the product on a sample support and follow its current label. GOLDEN’s general guidance recommends several light layers rather than one heavy coat, but that guidance does not establish compatibility with every soot-and-support combination. How to vary the marks
Fumage is not a measured drawing method: change one movement choice at a time and observe how the soot pattern changes on your practice surface.

Safety: keep flame and aerosol work separate
The candle-soot tutorial warns that a support held too close to the flame may burn or catch fire, and that leaving the flame in one place can scorch the surface. It also warns to keep fixative spray away from a lit flame and to use it with ventilation. These are secondary-source cautions, not a formal fire-safety standard; no universal safe flame distance or guaranteed-safe candle type is established. Follow the candle and spray product instructions, supervise minors, and keep the work area controlled. Use aerosol only after extinguishing the candle, and follow the spray’s current label and ventilation directions.

Why soot makes the image
In an interview with UC Berkeley’s Oral History Center, artist Patrick Hayashi recounts discovering smoke marks accidentally, experimenting with matches, and later using a small kerosene lamp. He explains the role of soot: “the smoke has to have soot in it, and so that’s what creates the image.” His account shows that artists have used other soot-bearing smoke sources, but the candle method above is the more straightforward place to begin.
