A bottle cutter scores a line around glass; it does not saw through the bottle. To make a decor piece, you must separate the scored sections, smooth the cut edge, and then decorate the result. Clean cuts are not guaranteed: glass and bottle shapes vary, so choose a smooth, unpatterned cutting area and follow the directions for your specific cutter.
What a bottle cutter does—and what it does not
A bottle cutter holds the bottle against a scoring wheel so it can make a line around the glass. The rest of the process—separation and edge finishing—is separate. Armour describes possible projects such as hanging planters, terrariums, bowls, and candle holders, but these are ideas, not assurances that every bottle or cut will be suitable.

The instructions and included parts vary by cutter. Do not assume that one brand’s scoring or separation steps apply to another tool.
Choose a bottle and cutter that fit the project
Look for a smooth cutting area
Creative Create recommends a smooth, unpatterned section where the score will go. Raised patterns, seams, or other uneven areas can make it harder to keep the scoring wheel in consistent contact. A suitable area does not guarantee a successful cut, and compatibility depends on the bottle and the cutter.

Check the tool’s documented fit and setup
Before starting, check the selected cutter’s manual for supported bottle dimensions and shapes, how the cutting position is adjusted, how the bottle is separated, and what finishing supplies are included. Manuals and configurations differ; the available guidance does not establish that one model performs better than another.
How to cut a bottle
Use the exact instructions supplied with your cutter. Armour’s workflow is to score, tap, separate, smooth the edges, and decorate. Other cutters may require different actions or sequence.

- Set up safely. Assemble the cutter on a firm, level surface as directed by its manual. Wear safety goggles and the hand protection specified for the tool.
- Position the bottle. Set the cutter for the intended cut and place the bottle so the scoring wheel meets the glass as the manual directs. Armour’s instructions say the wheel should be straight against the glass at a 90-degree angle.
- Make the score. Follow the cutter’s guidance for pressure and movement. Armour calls for one continuous score, warns against excessive pressure, and says not to score repeatedly over the same line. These directions are specific to its instructions; use another maker’s procedure for another tool.
- Separate the glass. Use only the tapping or separation method specified in the cutter manual. Keep the work area covered or otherwise arranged to contain fragments as directed; do not force a separation using an improvised method.
- Finish the edge. Smooth the separated edge with abrasives appropriate to the cutter and intended finish. Diamond Tech’s Generation Green kit manual lists emery paper; Creative Create recommends progressing through higher sandpaper grits for a smoother finish. There is no universal grit sequence established by these sources.
- Decorate only after finishing and cleanup. Remove fragments from the work area and dispose of cut or broken glass in a suitable container, following the tool instructions and local disposal guidance.
Safety checklist for cutting glass
- Wear safety goggles or protective glasses specified for the work; ordinary eyeglasses are not a substitute for protective eyewear.
- Use the gloves or other hand protection called for in the cutter’s instructions.
- Work on a firm, level surface and cover the work area to help contain fragments.
- Keep cut and broken glass controlled, and put fragments into a container for disposal rather than leaving them loose.
- Read the full manual for the particular cutter. The listed safety points do not replace its complete precautions.
Finish the edge before using the bottle as decor
Separation leaves an edge that needs its own finishing step. Use the abrasive type and method recommended for the cutter, then progress through finer abrasives if the relevant instructions call for it. Check the edge carefully, and do not assume that a finished-looking cut is safe for every purpose.
The available guidance does not establish that cut bottles are suitable for food or drink contact, heat exposure, or structural use. Avoid assigning those uses based only on a smooth-looking edge.

Decor ideas—and their limits
Armour names hanging planters, terrariums, bowls, and candle holders as possible bottle-cutter projects. Treat each as a design idea rather than a guaranteed result or a safety certification. Whether a particular cut bottle works for a project depends on the bottle, the cut, its finished edge, and the demands of the intended use.
Glass can behave unpredictably, and Armour’s FAQ warns that results may differ. A bottle may not separate as hoped, even when the instructions are followed; do not promise a flawless cut or treat every cut piece as ready for use.
