WOOD Magazine offers a free plan for a folding, two-sided children’s easel: one side is a chalkboard, while the other holds drawing paper from a roll. The design also includes two supply trays and is intended for children ages 3–7, according to the plan—not as a safety certification. Open the official plan page to access its downloadable PDF.
What the free easel plan builds
The easel consists of two hinged frames that fold together. A melamine-faced panel painted with chalkboard paint forms one working side; the reverse side uses cleats to hold drawing paper. A dowel supports a paper roll, and two trays provide space for art supplies. The project plan is identified as DP-00478 and the PDF is copyright 2005; WOOD Magazine’s article linking to it was published December 12, 2017.
The design is listed among WOOD Magazine’s free plans in its project-plan index. The PDF is the essential source for drawings and construction details: download the official 11-page Young Artist’s Easel plan.

Both sources specify paper 24 inches wide, but they disagree on roll length. The 2017 web article says 105 feet; the downloadable plan says 150 feet. The PDF also lists Dick Blick and a $14.99 price, which are historical details rather than current availability or pricing.

For a replacement roll, prioritize width and fit over the older length and price references. Check the core diameter against the dowel and holder on the completed easel, and make sure the roll can feed through the rail-and-cleat arrangement. The plan specifies a ⅜-inch-diameter hardwood dowel, but does not establish a universal core size for present-day rolls.

Use the PDF drawings to verify every fractional measurement before cutting. Text extraction can garble fractions, and the plan images—not a copied or inferred cut list—should govern the build.
Machines, bits, and shop setup
This is a machine-intensive woodworking project. The instructions call for a tablesaw with a dado set, drill press, bandsaw, router table and handheld router, clamps, and a ⅜-inch Forstner bit. The listed router bits include a ¼-inch round-over bit and a ½-inch rabbet bit. The construction involves half-lap joints, dadoes, rabbets, bevels, and routed edges; the source assigns no skill rating, so builders should assess their own experience and equipment before starting.

How the construction is organized
- Make the two frames. Cut the oak legs and rails to the verified plan dimensions and join each pair of legs with rails using half-laps.
- Prepare the panel openings. Cut rabbets in the frame openings for the melamine-faced panels. Paint one panel with chalkboard paint as directed, then glue the panels into the frames.
- Join the frames. Connect the two assemblies with the specified 2-inch strap hinges so the easel can fold.
- Add paper and supply hardware. Install the cleats on the drawing-paper side. Fit the dowel through the roll core and retain it with the specified turnbutton; then build and attach the two trays.
- Finish the surfaces. Follow the plan’s masking and finishing sequence before loading the easel with paper and supplies.
This overview is not a substitute for the plan’s diagrams, dimensions, or safety practices. The PDF’s drawings show the joinery and component placement needed to execute the steps.
Paint and finish guidance
The plan names Rust-Oleum Specialty Chalk Board paint as the example used for the chalkboard panel; that is a project reference, not a current comparative recommendation. Its finish instructions call for masking the panels and tray bottoms, applying three coats of water-based satin polyurethane, and sanding between coats with 220-grit paper.

Age guidance is not a safety rating
The PDF says the project suits children ages 3–7. It does not provide a safety certification, tip-resistance test, load rating, or current regulatory analysis. Treat the age range as the designer’s intended audience, not proof that a finished easel meets a particular safety standard. The plan also does not specify a tested stability threshold or establish suitability for unsupervised use.
