The Fusible Flowers Wall Quilt is a 47-1/2-inch-square fusible-appliqué project: large flower and leaf shapes are fused to a fabric foundation, edge-stitched, then bordered, quilted, and bound. The instructions use fabric roles and colors, so the Camelot collection shown in the original sample is not required.

Project size and pattern source

The project finishes at 47-1/2 inches square, with a 24-inch finished center block. The pattern page, credited to American Patchwork & Quilting Editors and published June 14, 2013, describes a wall quilt made by fusing large flower and leaf shapes. Its sample uses the Camelot collection by Jason Yenter for In the Beginning Fabrics; that is sample attribution rather than a required fabric line. Read the Fusible Flowers Wall Quilt pattern.

Materials to gather

The pattern’s fabric quantities assume 44/45-inch-wide, 100% cotton fabric. Choose fabrics by the listed roles and colors; the source does not specify brands, batting fiber or loft, or a sewing-machine model.

Material Quantity or specification Pattern use
Beige print 3/4 yard Appliqué foundation
Dark-brown print 1-7/8 yards Appliqués, outer border, and binding
Red print 1/2 yard Appliqués
Green print 1 yard Appliqués
Dark-green print 1/2 yard Appliqués
Small red-and-brown, dark-gray, and yellow-and-brown floral pieces Small pieces; exact yardage not stated in the pattern Appliqués
Green-and-orange stripe 1/3 yard Inner border
Backing fabric 3-1/8 yards Quilt backing
Batting 56-inch square Quilt layer
Lightweight fusible web Quantity not stated in the pattern Fusing appliqué shapes to fabric

Prepare and fuse the appliqué shapes

  1. Trace the pattern shapes onto the paper side of lightweight fusible web, leaving space between shapes. Cut around each tracing about 1/4 inch beyond its line. The pattern suggests cutting out the centers inside the traced lines to reduce stiffness.
  2. Press the web to the wrong side of the selected fabric, following that web manufacturer’s pressing directions. Let it cool, cut each fabric shape on the traced line, and peel away its paper backing.
  3. Arrange the appliqués on the foundation and border pieces, then fuse them in place according to the web manufacturer’s directions.
  4. Secure the edges with matching thread and a short zigzag or satin stitch. Work from the lower appliqué layers to the upper layers.

Assemble the quilt top

  1. Cut a 26-inch beige square for the center foundation. Lightly press diagonal folds to make placement guides.
  2. Arrange and stitch the central appliqué. Trim the block to 24-1/2 inches square, including seam allowances.
  3. Add the green-and-orange inner border.
  4. Piece dark-brown strips for the outer borders, apply the remaining appliqués to those borders, and attach the borders to the quilt center.
