A marionette is made by designing a movable figure, building and joining its parts, finishing and dressing it, then attaching strings to a controller and adjusting the rig until it moves as intended. The figure may be carved from wood, made from fabric, or built from a combination of materials; its joints and strings depend on the character and movements the maker wants.
1. Design the character around its movement
Before choosing materials, the maker decides what the marionette should look like and what it needs to do. A figure meant to walk, turn its head, or gesture needs appropriately placed joints and strings. A simpler figure may need less articulation. Ronnie Burkett’s maker profile describes designing characters and costumes as part of his process, while a maker tutorial outlines beginning with a sketch and character choices: Centaur Theatre’s profile of Ronnie Burkett and Barbora Mihoková’s maker tutorial.

2. Choose materials and make the figure’s parts
Wood carving is one established approach, not a requirement for every marionette. For a wooden figure, a maker can transfer patterns to wood, cut out the pieces, carve details, and sand the surfaces by hand. Burkett’s documented process uses aspen. Other builds combine materials: the Smithsonian’s Tiger I marionette record lists wood, fabric, and metal, and MoMA’s account of Sophie Taeuber-Arp’s marionettes also documents varied materials. A cloth body with a carved wooden head is another possible construction.

Tools follow the chosen method. A carving knife and small gouge are useful for a carved-wood build; fabric or mixed-material figures call for different materials and tools. The Marionette Technique guide describes basic carving tools and construction methods.
3. Join the parts so they can move
Once the parts are made, the maker connects them at the joints selected in the design. The technique guide describes methods including cord, wire links, and wooden pins. The right connection depends on the movement required: a joint must let a part move in the intended way while remaining attached during manipulation. Joint placement is therefore a design decision, not a fixed pattern used for every figure.

4. Paint, finish, and costume the figure
Painting and small details give the figure its expression and character. The maker then adds clothing and accessories, which may be sewn, glued, or assembled from other materials. Burkett’s profile, for example, describes painted faces and patterned leather shoes that are stitched and glued. Those details belong to his individual process; they are not a universal marionette recipe.
5. Attach strings and make a controller
Strings connect the figure to a controller held above it. Depending on the design, they may attach at the head, shoulders or back, hands, and legs. The puppeteer moves the controller to operate the strings, translating hand movements into actions by the figure. A maker’s technique guide discusses string attachment and control, while the Smithsonian record documents a two-piece wooden T-shaped control on the Tiger I marionette.

There is no universal string count. The Smithsonian’s Tiger I record specifies eleven strings, but that is one documented animal figure, not a standard for all marionettes. A different character, joint arrangement, or desired range of movement calls for a different rig.
6. Adjust the rig and rehearse
After assembly, the maker checks how each string affects the figure and practices controlled movements. If a movement is awkward or a part does not respond as intended, the maker can adjust the string arrangement or revisit the joint and attachment choices. Harlequin Puppet Theatre’s construction notes recommend checking each string’s function as assembly progresses; the technique guide also emphasizes practicing balance and small, controlled movement. This is hands-on tuning rather than a standardized test.

What changes from one marionette to another?
- Materials and weight: a carved wooden figure differs from a fabric or mixed-material build in how its parts are made and joined.
- Movement: the character’s actions determine which parts need joints and where strings should attach.
- Control arrangement: string count and controller design vary with the figure and the movements the puppeteer needs to operate.
- Tools and finish: carving, sewing, painting, and assembling mixed materials require different approaches.
These are practical design choices, not a published construction standard. The sources document distinct materials, joints, and controls rather than a single required method.
