If you’re making art with children
Choose a material or recipe explicitly intended for children and follow its age and use instructions, rather than treating a professional sculpting formula as play wax. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends looking for art materials labeled as conforming to ASTM D4236 and bearing the ACMI Approved Product seal. Those labels do not guarantee complete safety; the AAP also advises adult supervision, handwashing and checking crayon labels for talc. AAP art-safety guidance.
Health Canada likewise advises using modeling clay made for children or a homemade recipe suitable for children, reading and following labels, and maintaining active supervision. Health Canada’s guidance.

For a child-oriented activity, the American Chemical Society offers a supervised sculpture-dough activity using flour, salt, cornstarch, vegetable oil, food coloring and water.
