To begin hand quilting, sandwich a quilt top, batting, and backing; baste the layers closely; then sew through all three with one strand of hand-quilting thread and a short needle. A size 8–10 between, about 18 inches of thread, and a well-fitting thimble make a practical starting setup. The basic stitch is a short running stitch; you can work it as a rocking stitch or use a slower up-and-down stab stitch.

What you need to start hand quilting

Hand quilting secures the quilt top, batting, and backing with needle and thread, usually using a short running stitch. The Quilt Museum and Gallery’s 2011 Textile Techniques sheet defines it as sewing a running stitch across the area being quilted.

  • Quilt sandwich: a quilt top, batting, and backing, basted together so the layers stay aligned.
  • Needle: a short quilting needle, commonly called a between. Sizes 8–10 are a useful range; size 8 or 9 is a specific starting recommendation in American Quilting Magazine’s basic lesson.
  • Thread: hand-quilting thread, used as one strand through all three layers. Start with about 18 inches so the thread is manageable and less likely to tangle.
  • Thimble: one that fits securely and comfortably, often worn on the middle finger to help push the needle.
  • Optional support: a quilting hoop or frame can hold the fabric steady, especially for stab stitching.
  • Layout tools: temporary fabric marker or chalk, ruler, and scissors for marking and preparing quilting lines.

These are practical starting points, not rigid rules. Choose a needle and thimble that let you handle the needle comfortably and maintain control.

Prepare and baste the quilt sandwich

Align the backing, batting, and quilt top, smoothing each layer so it lies flat. Baste before quilting; if the layers shift, stitches can pull the surface into puckers. QuiltCon’s fundamentals class recommends close basting and gives 2–3 inches apart as a spacing recommendation for lap quilting basting. That is a basting guideline, not a required distance between quilting stitches.

How to make a rocking stitch

A rocking stitch builds a row by loading several short stitches onto the needle before pulling it through. The needle rocks through the layers rather than being pushed straight down and back up for every stitch. This can create a steady rhythm and smooth rows once both hands coordinate the motion.

  1. Thread a size 8–10 between or comparable short quilting needle with one strand of hand-quilting thread. Begin with about 18 inches.
  2. Make a small quilter’s knot at the thread end. Insert the needle through the quilt top and batting only, then bring it up at the point where the quilting line begins. Pull gently so the knot slips into the batting rather than sitting on the surface.
  3. Hold the needle at a comfortable angle and take several short, even bites through all three layers. Keep the bites similar in length and avoid pulling hard enough to dimple or pucker the fabric.
  4. Pull the needle through and repeat, checking that the stitches look consistent on both the front and back. Use a thimble if pushing the needle strains your finger.

The Guild’s rocking-stitch lesson focuses on uniform needle movement. For a beginner, even, comfortable stitches matter more than forcing a particular speed.

Rocking stitch or stab stitch?

Both methods sew a running stitch through the quilt layers, but they handle the needle differently. The best choice depends on which motion gives you more control and comfort.

Method How it works Practical trade-off
Rocking stitch Load several stitches onto the needle in a rocking motion, then pull the needle through. Can support an efficient rhythm and smooth rows, but coordinating both hands takes practice.
Stab stitch Pass the needle up and down through the layers one stitch at a time. Offers direct up-and-down control and is often easier to manage in a hoop or frame, but is generally slower.

The Quilt Museum’s technique sheet describes a hoop or frame as a way to hold fabric for stab stitch. A hoop is optional rather than a requirement for hand quilting. Try both motions on a small basted sample and compare stitch consistency, hand comfort, portability, and the appearance you prefer.

How to travel between nearby quilting areas

To move the thread a short distance without stitching across the visible surface, pass the needle through the quilt top and batting only, emerging near the next quilting area. Avoid catching the backing when the travel is intended to stay hidden within the quilt.

How to hide the starting and finishing knots

Starting knot

Make a small quilter’s knot, then take the needle through the quilt top and batting only before bringing it up at the start of the quilting line. A gentle tug should draw the knot into the batting. If it does not pop through, avoid yanking; check that the knot is small and that the needle has not been taken through the backing.

Finishing knot

  1. Make a small knot close to the quilt top after the last stitch.
  2. Pass the needle through the top and batting only, then bring it out about 1/2–1 inch away.
  3. Pull gently until the knot disappears into the batting, then trim the thread near the exit point.

Keep stitches comfortable and even

  • Baste closely enough to keep the three layers from shifting as you work.
  • Use gentle, steady tension; pulling too tightly can pucker the top.
  • Keep stitches short and similar in size on both sides. Consistency improves with practice.
  • Wear a securely fitted thimble and pause or adjust your grip if needle handling becomes uncomfortable.
  • Expect the pace to depend on the quilt, your chosen stitch, and your developing skill. Hand quilting is time-consuming, and there is no reliable fixed completion time.
